Reviews Summary
The Genoveva Chavez Community Center is praised as an amazing community sports center with well-maintained facilities, including a fantastic indoor track and pool complex. However, some visitors express significant frustration with unpredictable pool closures and scheduling issues, particularly for families with young children, and occasional inconsistencies with fitness class availability.
"Amazing community sports center. Facilities are well kept in spite of the heavy use they endure (which is good, of course). The indoor track course if fantastic for the winter months when the outdoors are covered in snow or all muddy. Lots of exercise equipment and classes to choose from."
Peter Hey (RV PLANET)
"Great facility. But the reason to go is the pool and that pool especially for toddlers is largely unavailable and serviced by unfriendly and unhelpful staff. The pool schedule changes frequently and even after checking the website and times, and calling before going, I'm often told something compltely opposite on arrival and forced to break the news to a crestfallen toddler that for what ever reason, the pool is one again, closed unexpectantly. Being told something is open, when it is not, is beyond frustrating. Never mind the poor management, constant roof leaks in the winter, and frequent repairs that render the pool closed for months. (Closing for two months to repair some windows is just asinine)."

"What a great community center! There’s an indoor pool next to an ice skating rink, how cool! It was very busy, but it’s so big. We stopped in for a shower during a camping trip. Showers were $3 and all you need is your photo ID."

The Aquatic Experience at GCCC
However, potential visitors should be aware of some recurring issues highlighted in reviews. The toddler pool, while a great concept, is reportedly often unavailable or serviced by staff described as unfriendly and unhelpful. Furthermore, the pool schedule is known to change frequently and unpredictably, leading to frustration for families who arrive only to find it closed unexpectedly. Frequent and sometimes lengthy closures for repairs, such as window replacements, have also been noted, impacting consistent access.
Despite these challenges, the affordability of the pool access is a significant draw. For those who can navigate the schedule uncertainties, the GCCC pool offers a comprehensive and enjoyable aquatic experience, especially during Santa Fe's cooler months when outdoor swimming isn't an option.
Fitness and Recreation Options
The center also hosts various fitness classes designed to cater to different interests and fitness levels. However, a point of concern for some patrons is the inconsistency in the fitness class schedule, with reports of frequent last-minute cancellations and a lack of explanation or backup instructors. This can be a significant drawback for individuals who rely on these classes for their fitness routine.
Adding to its unique appeal, the GCCC uniquely includes an ice skating rink, providing an additional recreational activity that complements its other sports and fitness facilities. This multi-faceted approach makes the Genoveva Chavez Community Center a versatile destination for a wide range of athletic pursuits and community engagement.
Community Events and Atmosphere
While the center is a busy place, with reviews noting it can be very busy, its large size helps accommodate many visitors. The general sentiment is that the facilities are well-maintained despite heavy use. The affordability of its services, including drop-in fees for showers and general access, makes it an accessible resource for the community.
Overall, the GCCC fosters a sense of community through its diverse offerings and event hosting capabilities. It's a place where residents can engage in sports, fitness, and cultural activities, contributing to the social fabric of Santa Fe.
