"We had such an incredible time with La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks this morning! From start to finish, everything was seamless and enjoyable.
Booking online was super easy and intuitive, and I loved that they sent a reminder email the day before with all the helpful details we needed to be prepared. The shop was easy to find, and while parking at Kellogg Park can be tricky, we lucked out with an early tour. We were still about 15 minutes late, but the staff could not have been kinder or more reassuring—they made sure we didn’t feel stressed and were still able to join right in.
Inside the shop, they had everything we needed—glasses holders, waterproof phone cases (which we bought at a reasonable price), and other small essentials that gave us peace of mind on the water.
Our guides were Nick, Jen, and Chris (on his first day!), and they were all fantastic. Nick led the group with clear instructions and fun commentary, while Jen and Chris stayed near the back with me. I had never kayaked before and was nervous about ending up in the water, but Jen gave me constant encouragement and helpful tips, and Chris (despite it being his first day) was wonderfully engaged, friendly, and supportive. Thanks to them, I never once felt like a burden for being slower—they truly made the experience special for me.
Out on the water, we saw sea lions, leopard sharks, colorful fish, and even rare birds as we made our way through the caves. The weather was perfect, the group was great, and the bright yellow kayaks made it all feel cheerful and fun.
This was an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Whether you’re brand new to kayaking (like me!) or more experienced, you’ll be in good hands with this team. We’re already talking about coming back for another adventure!"

"Absolutely loved this tour! From the moment you step in the shop to check in, you feel the great vibes from the staff. They were extremely helpful getting your gear on and were clear with instructions. A short walk to the beach and we were met with our guides. Chandler and Lauren you guys rock! Knowledgeable, funny, helpful, thoughtful like when the man needed a better back rest. You guys are really good at what you do. My husband and I really enjoyed the tour. This was an amazing start to our day. Thank you!!"

"Hannah was an AMAZING guide! She took the time to teach us proper techniques for ocean kayaking, and safety was her utmost concern. It was a very overcast day with very variable waves. We were able to see leopard sharks, the native orange fish, many sea birds, and sea lions, too! She taught us about geological, ecological, and historical facts about the area as well. The staff was supportive of one another and helpful to all. Oh-you will get wet, even if you dont tip over, so plan accordingly! Thanks for a great first experience kayaking on the ocean!"

Exploring the Seven Sea Caves
Sunny Jim Cave is perhaps the most famous, accessible through a tunnel and 145 stairs from The Cave Store. This cave offers a dramatic interior with light filtering through an underwater opening, creating an ethereal glow. Other caves, like the Arch Cave and Clam Cave, are primarily explored by kayakers and swimmers, offering thrilling adventures into the ocean's embrace.
Many local tour operators offer guided kayak and stand-up paddleboard tours that navigate through these magnificent caves. Wildlife Encounters: Sea Lions and Sharks
During warmer months, the waters off La Jolla also become a haven for leopard sharks. These gentle giants are often spotted by kayakers and snorkelers in the shallow waters near the shore. They are harmless to humans and are a fascinating sight to behold. Guides are adept at spotting them and can educate visitors about their behavior and importance in the marine ecosystem.
Beyond these iconic species, the La Jolla Ecological Reserve is teeming with biodiversity. Keep an eye out for colorful Garibaldi fish (California's state marine fish), various seabirds, and if you're lucky, dolphins or even whales passing by. The clear waters make it an excellent spot for snorkeling and observing the underwater world.
