We were here at dusk on a Sunday. There were a few other people around. What a brilliant exploration of one man's intense love for Mormonism! Creative sculptures, lovely flowers, a giant birdhouse, VERY happy bees. Aren't beehives an LDS symbol? As you walk onto the property there are even trees with eyes.
Are you a Severance fan? Some of it reminded me a lot of memorials to Kier in the show!!
What an interesting place to explore. We were here about 45 minutes and this was plenty of time to see the features and check out the time line display of the gardens evolution at the back."

"It’s a fun time to walk around and check out this gem. If you’re visiting Salt lake and looking for a low key, low pressure experience this is a good option for you. I’ve been a handful of times and there were always very few other or no other people at all. It takes about 10 minutes to walk around and view everything of you don’t read about all the sculptures. Highly recommended as a low key experience."

The Visionary Behind Gilgal Gardens
Child's work is characterized by its unconventional approach, most famously exemplified by the 'Joseph Smith Sphinx.' This sculpture, a prominent feature of the garden, combines the likeness of the church's founder with the iconic Egyptian Sphinx. Other carvings depict biblical scenes, LDS temple motifs, and even personal milestones in Child's life, such as his marriage and family. The garden also incorporates symbolic elements like beehives, a common LDS symbol representing industry and community.
Visitors often describe the experience as stepping into a unique, almost surreal, world. The combination of intricate art, symbolic engravings, and the tranquil garden setting creates a contemplative atmosphere. It's a place that sparks curiosity and invites personal reflection on faith, art, and individual expression.
Exploring the Sculptures and Symbolism
Beyond the Sphinx, the gardens are adorned with intricate stone carvings that serve as a visual narrative. These engravings often depict scenes from LDS scripture, historical events, and personal reflections of the creator. Look closely for symbols like beehives, which represent the industrious nature of the community and the church's emphasis on collective effort.
Other notable features include the giant birdhouse, adding a touch of whimsy, and various statues that reflect Child's artistic vision. The entire garden is a testament to his dedication, with many pieces offering a glimpse into his personal faith journey and his unique way of expressing it through art.
