What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum for its engaging historic train displays and family-friendly atmosphere, particularly the themed character rides. While the short train rides are a highlight for many, some reviewers noted that the duration might be shorter than expected. A few comments also pointed out areas needing minor safety improvements on older platforms, though the knowledgeable and friendly volunteers consistently receive high marks.
"Great place to spend an hour! The family really enjoyed the quick train ride and being able to check out the different train cars, restorations, etc. Our son is 5 and it was perfect amount of time to explore without him getting bored or figgity. Volunteers were nice and knowledgeable. The only reason I'm took off 1 star is safety. The steps and platforms going into the train car displays at the upper museum need some attention. Some very unstable and the wood railings had bad wood splinters and paint flaking off. Our son was poked by a sharp piece of wood when sliding his hand down the railing. He was ok, not the end of the world, just a some quick minor repairs and back to 5 stars. Would return for sure."

"Honestly, we were a little confused and disappointed. We though that this would be a decently long train ride through the fall foliage, but it’s about 3 minutes up a hill to a weird patch of pumpkins on hay haha… that said, we made the best of it and it was cool to see the old school trains. Staff were very nice, just a little deceiving with the advertising in my opinion."

"Great place to visit for any age railfans..
I had the privilege of bringing a new addition to the museum on 10-21-24, a GE 45-ton locomotive which was saved from the would-be death of the scrapyard in Buffalo, NY by one of the enthusiastic members of the museum Joe Nugent. He's managed to preserve another piece of American RR history, as is what I specialize in as well."

The Thrill of Historic Train Rides
When planning your visit, it's crucial to understand that the length and nature of the train rides can vary. Some reviews mention shorter rides, emphasizing that the experience is more about the novelty and the chance to be on a historic train rather than a long scenic tour. This means managing expectations, especially for those anticipating extended journeys through the countryside. However, the enthusiasm of the volunteers and the chance to see and interact with these magnificent machines often make up for the ride's duration.
For the best experience, always check the museum's schedule for specific train ride offerings, durations, and any associated ticket requirements. Booking in advance for special events is highly recommended to avoid disappointment, as these popular rides can sell out quickly.
Preserving Railway Heritage
Recent acquisitions, such as a GE 45-ton locomotive saved from a scrapyard, highlight the museum's commitment to rescuing and preserving significant pieces of railway heritage. This ongoing work means that visitors might see active restoration projects or newly arrived pieces of history during their visit. The former depot structure also serves as a repository of knowledge, offering insights into local and international rail history.
For railfans and history enthusiasts, the museum offers an unparalleled opportunity to get up close with these powerful machines. The knowledgeable volunteers are eager to share their expertise, answering questions and providing context that brings the history of each train to life.
Safety and Accessibility Considerations
It's important for visitors, especially families with young children, to be vigilant. Always supervise children closely when exploring the train cars and be mindful of your footing on platforms and steps. The museum's volunteers are dedicated to maintaining the exhibits, but the nature of historic preservation means some areas might not meet modern accessibility standards.
Despite these points, the overall experience is highly positive, with many visitors praising the friendly and knowledgeable staff. By being aware and taking necessary precautions, visitors can safely enjoy the rich history and unique attractions the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum has to offer.
