Visitors consistently rave about the stunning, almost unbelievable turquoise color of Diablo Lake, calling it one of the most beautiful places they've ever seen. The panoramic mountain views and the scenic drive along Highway 20 are also major highlights. Some note that it gets very crowded on weekends and can be windy, advising weekday visits for a more peaceful experience.
"Probably one of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen. With ample parking, facilities and picnic areas this is a great place to stop and take in the sites. Glaciers, trees, mountains all set as the backdrop to this gorgeous turquoise water lake. All the Insta and TikTok posts don’t do this place justice. You must see it in real life. A must stop while at the National Park."

"If you have an opportunity to come here, it is definitely worth the trip.
It’s pretty easy to find has big open parking space it is dog friendly and they do have bathrooms on site. On the weekend it gets very very busy. I would definitely recommend to come during the week if you have the time. There’s tons of people taking pictures , big families so just be prepared to spend a little bit of time there for you to take your own pictures.
The views were majestic but it does get pretty windy up there. 😍🌬️
I would highly recommend to continue driving for another 5 miles. We actually drove down to where you can catch a water taxi, and we’re able to get off with our fur babies and put her feet in the water, which was pretty awesome.
Absolutely stunning!"

"This overlook of Diablo Lake is absolutely worth a stop. It’s right off the main road with plenty of parking spread across multiple viewpoints. The view is stunning, and you’ll see why it has so many great reviews. It was fairly busy when we visited, and I imagine weekends get even more crowded, but it’s the kind of place you at least want to hop out of the car and snap a picture. The scenery is breathtaking and a quick, easy highlight of the area."

The Magic of Diablo Lake's Color
The intensity of this color can vary significantly depending on the season, the amount of glacial meltwater, and the weather. During warmer months when glacial activity is high, the color is at its most brilliant. On overcast days or when there's less silt, the lake might appear a more muted blue-green. This variability makes each visit a unique visual experience.
Many visitors are captivated by this natural wonder, with some comparing it favorably to famous lakes in Canada. The overlook provides a perfect vantage point to appreciate this geological marvel, making it a must-see for anyone traveling through the North Cascades.
Navigating Highway 20 and Nearby Gems
Don't be tempted to rush directly to Diablo Lake. Take your time to stop at places like the Washington Pass Overlook, which offers equally stunning, albeit different, panoramic views. For those seeking more active exploration, trails like the Blue Lake Trail or the more challenging Maple Pass Loop are accessible from Highway 20 and provide opportunities to immerse yourself deeper into the park's natural beauty.
Remember that Highway 20 is a seasonal road, typically closed from November to May due to heavy snowfall. Always check the WSDOT website for current road conditions and closures before planning your trip.
Experiencing the Lake Shore and Beyond
For a truly unique adventure, consider the water taxi service that operates further down the highway. This option allows you to get even closer to the water and explore areas like Hidden Cove Campground, offering a more intimate connection with the lake and its surroundings. This is particularly appealing for those who want to extend their stay or experience the lake from a different vantage point.
Remember that reservations and permits might be necessary for certain activities like camping or water taxi services, so plan accordingly. The North Cascades offer a wealth of experiences, from scenic drives to adventurous hikes and unique water-based explorations.
