"The Laurent House in Rockford, IL is a marvel of design and preservation! In the 1950s, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Laurent Family cooperated to build (and later enlarge) a wheel-chair accessible home in Wright’s Usonian style. And the Laurents lived in the home for over 60 years, maintaining its original beauty! In a one-hour tour, our docent, Mollie, told marvelous stories and provided detailed insight into the house’s origin and history. We have great memories and amazing photos! Thank you!"

Deep Dives

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Innovation of Accessible Design

The Laurent House stands as a singular achievement in Frank Lloyd Wright's prolific career: it is the only home he ever designed specifically for a client with a physical disability. Commissioned by Kenneth and Phyllis Laurent, who faced mobility challenges, Wright meticulously incorporated features that ensured ease of movement and comfort. This included wider doorways, hallways that could double as living spaces, and a single-level Usonian design that eliminated the need for stairs. Instagram+1

This commitment to accessibility wasn't just about practicality; it was about creating a beautiful, livable home that celebrated the occupants' lives. The design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, a hallmark of Wright's work, proving that thoughtful design can be both functional and aesthetically profound. Visitors often remark on how the house feels remarkably modern and livable, even decades later. InstagramReddit

The preservation of the Laurent House ensures that this pioneering example of universal design continues to inspire. It serves as a testament to Wright's ability to adapt his architectural vision to meet specific human needs, creating spaces that are not only iconic but also deeply considerate. Instagram+1

Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Vision

The Laurent House is a quintessential example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian architectural style. Developed in the mid-20th century, Usonian homes were Wright's vision for affordable, well-designed housing for the American middle class. He aimed to create a new type of American architecture that was deeply connected to its site and offered a more natural way of living. Instagram+1

Key characteristics of Usonian design, evident in the Laurent House, include the use of natural materials like wood and stone, flat roofs, and an open floor plan that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. Wright often incorporated built-in furniture and a strong emphasis on horizontal lines, creating a sense of groundedness and harmony. The single-story layout and efficient use of space were central to his concept. Instagram

Unlike his more opulent commissions, Usonian homes were intended to be more accessible to a broader audience, though they still required significant craftsmanship. The Laurent House, with its specific adaptations for accessibility, perfectly embodies this philosophy of creating beautiful, functional, and contextually relevant homes. Instagram+1

Preservation and Community Support

The ongoing preservation of the Laurent House is a testament to the dedication of its caretakers and the support of the community. After the Laurent family lived in the home for over 60 years, maintaining its original beauty, efforts were made to ensure its future as a historic site. InstagramReddit

This preservation is crucial for maintaining the integrity of Frank Lloyd Wright's design and its unique historical significance. Events like the "Bourbon, Brisket & Blues" fundraiser highlight the community's involvement in supporting the house's upkeep and educational programs. Instagram

Visitors can contribute to this preservation by taking tours and learning about the house's history. The success of the Laurent House as a preserved landmark relies on continued appreciation and support from architecture enthusiasts and the local Rockford community. InstagramReddit
