What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Winthrop Disc Golf Course is a highly regarded, championship-level disc golf destination, celebrated for its challenging layout and hosting the prestigious USDGC. Visitors appreciate the scenic views of Winthrop Lake and the vibrant atmosphere during tournaments. However, some reviewers note that course maintenance can be inconsistent outside of major events, with overgrown areas sometimes impacting the playing experience.
"Awesome course. USDGC is a first class operation. A must visit place. The organizers go all out to make your experience special."

"I've been visiting Winthrop Lake area, which now includes the disc golf course, years before this course was added. During the early few years of the course, I've had golfers tell me what a beautiful and challenging course it was - world class. It has hosted world championship tournaments for several years now.
The course has now also expanded into what used to be a 9 hole golf course that closed several years ago.
The sad part of this otherwise happy story is that Winthrop University, who owns and is responsible for maintenance of the entire course and lake, has begun to seriously neglect the maintenance. Grass gets knee-high before it is cut. Fences, bridges, and walkways are becoming overgrown, collapsing, and sometimes impassable.
There is a beautiful natural area at the north end of the lake, where there was once a delightful viewing deck with a boardwalk through a small swampy, natural area full of wildlife. The boardwalk rotted, was taken up, but never replaced. The deck became decrepit and overgrown with brambles. The deck was recently redone, but very poorly constructed, so it is already starting to decline, and once again, fully overgrown with blackberry vines.
I know this review sounds harsh, but it is a shame to see such a magnificent resource being effectively ignored.
The course is still used, though perhaps less so except when they do a quick clean-up for a tournament.
The nearby soccer and softball fields are still cared for as they always have been over the last 30 years since I've been a regular visitor.
I hope this review reaches someone who can motivate the college to do better."

"We attended/watched a professional tournament here- my first ever. Beautiful grounds and seemed well-laid out with plenty of room. There were food trucks and a tent with tables were there for the tournament.
We were able to watch some of my husband’s favorite disc golfers play and interacted with several different YouTubers he watches.
Beautiful campus! Great atmosphere! We are from Utah and this is our first time in this area of the country and just happened to be in the area when this tournament was also here. A wonderful coincidence!"

The USDGC Legacy
While the course is celebrated for its championship pedigree, it's important to note that its condition can fluctuate. Reviews suggest that outside of tournament preparations, maintenance might not always be at its peak, with reports of overgrown areas. This inconsistency is a point of discussion among visitors, highlighting the difference between the course's tournament-ready state and its everyday accessibility.
Despite potential maintenance variations, the sheer prestige and challenge of playing a course that has hosted so many iconic moments in disc golf history make it a must-visit. The opportunity to walk the same fairways as champions adds a unique allure for any disc golfer.
Navigating the Campus Course
To combat this, the UDisc app is consistently recommended by players. It provides detailed course maps, hole layouts, and GPS tracking, which are invaluable for finding your way between holes and understanding the intended flight paths. Without such a tool, players might find themselves wandering or unsure of where the next tee pad is located.
Beyond digital navigation, wearing comfortable and sturdy footwear is crucial. The terrain can vary, and you'll be doing a lot of walking across campus. Being prepared for the physical demands of traversing the course will enhance the overall experience.
Wildlife and Natural Beauty
This natural beauty is a significant draw, offering a pleasant backdrop for a round of disc golf. However, there are also mentions of areas where natural beauty has been impacted by maintenance neglect, such as overgrown boardwalks or viewing decks. Despite these issues, the inherent natural setting remains a positive aspect for many visitors.
When playing, especially near the water, it's a good idea to be mindful of the environment. Some players have taken steps to protect wildlife, like marking nesting areas, showing a community appreciation for the natural surroundings.
