What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reston National Golf Course is currently receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews, primarily due to severe maintenance issues. Golfers report dead greens, weedy fairways, neglected bunkers, and poor water management, deeming the high green fees unjustified. Distractions from children and slow pace of play further detract from the experience, leading many to advise against playing here.
"One of the Worst Courses in Northern Virginia
Reston National is by far one of the most poorly maintained golf courses I’ve played — especially given the high price point. The bunkers are a joke, with grass growing out of them like they haven’t been touched in weeks. The course overall feels neglected, with constant gnats swarming you the entire round. Bring bug spray — and expect to reapply it four or five times just to stay sane.
What really sets this place apart (in a bad way) is the constant interruption from kids running across the greens and fairways due to the nearby housing. It completely kills the atmosphere and makes it hard to focus on your game.
Save your money and play almost anywhere else. This course isn’t worth it."

"Course is horribly maintained. Terrible water management (huge puddles on the greens and on cart paths). Tee boxes and greens were mud with a bit of grass (see pics). Horrible."

"I haven’t played this course in over two years. I remember it as always being in good shape, well maintained and fun to play. Today I played it for $65 which included range balls and I was both dismayed and disappointed by the condition of the course. Not worth playing for half the price, maybe not even for free. The following were a disgrace, the tee boxes, the bunkers, the rough. Tee boxes were over grown, some covering the tee box markers , others bare or with patches of grass. Bunkers hard as a rock and it looked like they had never bent raked, Greens needed to be cut; forget about trying to gauge ball speed. The grass in the rough was so long and thick that you felt like you were in a cow pasture. I will never come back. No pride at all in maintaining this course."

Understanding the Course Conditions
These issues have led many golfers to question the value proposition, especially given the reported green fees, which some find to be excessively high for the current state of play. The course's water management has also been criticized, with puddles forming on greens and cart paths. This overall lack of upkeep has unfortunately overshadowed the course's historical reputation.
It's important for potential visitors to be aware of these widespread reports. While the course offers a standard 18-hole, par-71 layout, the current playing conditions are a major factor for golfers to consider before booking a tee time.
Navigating the Golfer's Experience
Pace of play is another significant concern, with some golfers reporting it as the slowest they've encountered in the Northern Virginia area. This can lead to longer rounds and a less enjoyable experience. Additionally, there have been mentions of issues with the golf carts, specifically regarding their brakes, which raises safety concerns for players.
Given these combined factors, many golfers who have played recently strongly advise others to reconsider playing here, suggesting that their money might be better spent at other golf courses in the region.
