Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Historic Oakwood Cemetery for its tranquil beauty and rich historical narrative, often describing it as a peaceful, reflective, and surprisingly energizing experience. Many highlight the engaging guided tours that bring the cemetery's 'residents' to life. However, some visitors have expressed disappointment regarding instances of theft of personal decorations, which can detract from the serene atmosphere.

"Cemeteries do not have to be morbid they are known to be a relaxing place of tranquility...This is such that place...This Cemetery is a nice place to observe the white washed graves...as well as reflect on life's value...I loved it!"

"Robin gave me a tour on a perfect fall day. I truly did not expect to feel so energized after seeing a cemetery, but she brought the entire place alive for me and connected so many of her "residents" to real life history. It felt like I was touring a fascinating museum instead of a cemetery.

Robin gives the residents of her "town" (population 25,0000) a voice through understanding their history. She helped to connect their individual lives to stories I could understand and identify with. I'm excited to now possess a copy of the book she and Bruce Miller wrote detailing a history I feel very much a part of, having grown up in the Triangle area myself.

I'm also impressed to know that the cemetery is far from full and offers green burials in a beautiful section in the back, along with traditional burials, cremation plots, and 2 mausoleums. Having lived in Cambridge, MA for several years enjoying long walks at Mt. Auburn cemetery, I'm sure I'll be back to enjoy the trails and monuments here and explore the history of the individuals who quietly reside at Oakwood."

"My parents are interred at the mausoleum. With permission, my family and I have utilized our own funds to enhance the mausoleum garden area in the front by planting flowers and decorating the space. Unfortunately, someone has removed all of our additions. As we are not local residents and must drive several hours to visit the mausoleum, this incident is particularly distressing, because we have worked hard to decorate it. The stolen items include all kinds of decorations, solar lights, planters, shepherd's hooks, flag, and flag stand. We are uncertain as to who is responsible, but we sincerely hope that they get caught. Apparently, theft has been an issue, and it is disheartening to know that individuals would remove items from a cemetery. As a result, and the main purpose of this review, is for families to be aware that decorations may be stolen from anywhere in the cemetery. Our intention for the mausoleum was to create a more welcoming atmosphere, as the area was in need of improvement, and we believed that others would also appreciate the enhancements. I have assigned a rating of 4 stars due to the kindness of the ladies in the office; otherwise, the rating would be lower. Although the cemetery is historic and could be quite lovely, we have not been entirely certain it’s right for us. We aspire to experience happiness and serenity during our visits and have considered exploring the possibility of relocating my parents."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Historic Oakwood Cemetery

Established in 1869, Historic Oakwood Cemetery is a sprawling 102-acre sanctuary that serves as a living testament to Raleigh's rich past. Founded on land gifted by the Mordecai family, it holds the final resting places for over 20,000 individuals, weaving a complex tapestry of local history. The cemetery's design, influenced by the era's romantic ideals of rural cemeteries, features winding paths, mature trees, and a serene atmosphere that invites contemplation. Instagram

Among its notable residents are nearly 1,500 Confederate soldiers, seven North Carolina governors, and five U.S. senators, each with their own story contributing to the state's narrative. The cemetery also showcases a variety of burial practices and artistic expressions, from grand mausoleums to intricately carved gravestones that often tell a personal story through their symbolism. Instagram Guided tours, often led by passionate historians, are the best way to unlock these narratives and connect with the individuals who shaped Raleigh. TikTokInstagram

Understanding Gravestone Symbolism

Gravestones in Historic Oakwood Cemetery are more than just markers; they are often rich with symbolism that offers insights into the lives and beliefs of those interred. Common symbols include angels, representing guidance and protection; lambs, signifying innocence, often for children; and weeping willows, symbolizing grief and mourning. The hourglass or scythe represents the passage of time and mortality, while flowers like roses can denote love or beauty. Instagram

Look closely at the obelisks, which symbolize eternal life and strength, or the broken column, often indicating a life cut short. The dove signifies peace and the Holy Spirit, and hands pointing upwards suggest a journey to heaven. Understanding these symbols can transform a simple walk through the cemetery into a fascinating exploration of Victorian-era beliefs and personal narratives. InstagramReddit

Green Burials and Modern Practices

Beyond its historical significance, Historic Oakwood Cemetery also embraces modern burial practices, including green burials. This environmentally conscious option involves natural decomposition with minimal embalming and biodegradable caskets or shrouds, allowing the body to return to the earth naturally. The cemetery offers a beautiful section dedicated to these burials, providing a peaceful and sustainable final resting place. Reddit

In addition to green burials, the cemetery accommodates traditional burials, cremation plots, and features two mausoleums for above-ground interment. This diversity in options ensures that families can choose a burial method that aligns with their personal preferences and values, all within the serene and historic setting of Oakwood. Reddit
