What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Dolphin Fleet for its high success rate in spotting whales, including humpbacks, fin whales, and dolphins. The knowledgeable naturalists and accommodating staff enhance the experience, making it educational and enjoyable for all. While seating can be competitive, the overall value and memorable encounters make it a top choice for whale watching on Cape Cod.
"Went with a few girlfriend’s Oct 4th for the afternoon tour. I thought we wouldn’t see much, but we saw 2 mola mola, 2 fin whales, a group of porpoises, many minkey whales, and also several minx sheer-water birds (may have butchered the spellings). It was so fun and not too cold on the water. Had a wonderful time! Loved the naturalist on board; she did so well.
They also had a food and bar. Reasonable price for boat food (7.50 for a hot dog)."

"Very nice experience. They did try to let everyone side of the boat see whales. However for our experience it seemed the boat went straight for the whales and always veered to the right. So if you sat in the front of the boat it was the perfect spot to see the initial interaction with the whales. And then the left side. So get there early and get bottom or top front or left side rail. But good explanations of the humpback whales which were mainly only ones we saw. Caught a quick glimpse of a fin whale. Overall a good experience but will always sit in the front of the boat for future excursions."

"First the basics. The ship is roomy with plenty of seating. I recommend going to the top and sitting on the benches next to the cabin. No one can stand in front of you there. There is a head, and snacks and drinks are also sold on board. As a progressive, I was very happy to be on board a vessel manned mostly by women. Only the captain was male. The first mate was one of 3 female captains though! That's great!
Now, the trip. We were incredibly lucky! There was a male humpback displaying a lot of surface displays and several breaches! It was incredible! I have visited all 50 states and 4 countries. This trip will be my fondest memory of all! My wife and I can't recommend this trip enough!"

To get the best shots, try to secure a spot on the front or top deck for unobstructed views. Use a camera with a good zoom lens to capture distant whale activity. Consider a waterproof camera or protective case for your gear, as sea spray can occur.
Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the whales. If shooting in auto mode, your camera will likely adjust, but manual control can be beneficial. A higher ISO might be necessary in lower light conditions, but be mindful of noise. Continuous shooting mode is great for capturing action sequences.
Tripods can be cumbersome on a moving boat and may obstruct other passengers. It's generally best to rely on a fast shutter speed and image stabilization. If you must use one, check with the operator beforehand and be considerate of others.
A waterproof camera bag or a dedicated rain cover for your camera is essential. You can also use a lens hood to help deflect some spray. Staying towards the center or rear of the boat might offer slightly less exposure to sea spray than the very front.
The 'golden hours' around sunrise and sunset can offer beautiful lighting, but whale watching tours typically operate during midday. Midday sun can be harsh, but it provides good visibility. Overcast days can also offer softer, more even light for photography.
