Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the breathtaking panoramic views and the historic significance of the Walkway Over the Hudson. Many appreciate the accessibility, including the elevator, and the opportunity for a long, scenic walk or bike ride. Some noted that decorations could enhance the ambiance and that vendor hours can be limited.

"Beautiful walkway with spectacular views of our gorgeous Hudson Valley. I especially enjoy it during autumn with all the colors on display. It is dog friendly but not all dogs are comfortable walking over the bridge. Although the trails at either side of the walkway are green, the walkway is concrete so although you'll love the walk, your pup might be more interested in what's at either end.🙂"

"Breathtaking!! It is incredible to see this bridge take on a new chapter in it's life! If you want a good walk, scenic views and get a better understanding of its history, I highly recommend that you walk this bridge. It's full of life everyday, from routine walkers and runners, to tourists looking for the perfect photo to families learning about the area together!"

Naomi Long

"This was an amazing experience we really enjoyed riding our bikes over the entire bridge and it was nice to have vendors at each end that you could get something to drink or eat if you wished. Unfortunately the gift shop closes early so we missed that opportunity to get our souvenir as I usually like to pick up a sticker but we were told we can get those online. We were blessed with a beautiful day it was very warm but not overbearing. I was a little disappointed as I was hoping the bridge would be more decorated and not so cold looking it would have been nice if it had some hanging flowers or something like that but that might not be possible or so maybe some potted flowers that sit on the ground and flower beds or something just something to make it more appealing and warm. I enjoyed watching a large barge and tugboat go underneath the bridge as we were standing there. It was absolutely beautiful."

A Bridge Through Time: The History of the Walkway

The Walkway Over the Hudson began its life in 1889 as the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge, a marvel of engineering that was once the world's longest bridge. Its primary purpose was to connect the coal fields of Pennsylvania with the industrial centers of New England, significantly reducing transport times. For decades, it served as a vital artery for freight and passenger trains, a testament to the era's ambition and innovation. Instagram

The bridge ceased railroad operations in the 1970s, and for a period, it stood dormant, a grand but forgotten structure. However, its potential as a public space was recognized, leading to its transformation into the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. This revitalization effort preserved its historic significance while creating a vibrant recreational area for the community and visitors alike. Instagram

Today, the Walkway is celebrated not only for its historical roots but also for its role in connecting communities and offering unparalleled scenic beauty. It stands as a symbol of adaptive reuse, demonstrating how historic infrastructure can be reimagined for modern enjoyment and appreciation. Instagram
