What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Portland for its free admission and diverse, thought-provoking contemporary art exhibitions. While some note its smaller size, many appreciate the quality of the artwork, including pieces by notable artists, and the friendly staff. Its location on the PSU campus and proximity to the Saturday Farmer's Market are also highlighted as positives.
"I stopped in on a recent trip to Portland, and I am so glad I did! There are a lot of stairs here. None to get in the building, but a few to get into the gallery and then to go down to the bottom floor. The people working were informative.
On the small side, but it is free admission. There is some interesting artwork here. Kind of thought provoking."

"Discovered this gem while I was at the farmers market next door and admission was free so why not?
This gallery is made up of professional and student art and during the day I went, all the art pieces followed the theme of 'data weave'.
I'm no judge of true art but some pieces were surprisingly good. There was this piece of middle eastern looking rug art that looked cool and trippy. Altogether, it's a nice break to catch your breath and immerse yourself in some amazing art."

"Not sure why someone gave this a 5-star rating because, as of September 9, it's under construction and not yet open. But since the Portland Art Museum isn't open today, and the 5-star rating, I decided to come visit.
I asked at an information desk in a building across the way and they said it's scheduled to open to the public on September 26.
UPDATE: Revisited January 2020. Smallish two-level contemporary exhibition, but I was surprised to see that they featured a work each by Koons, Hockney, Walker, even a Basquiat. Well worth the visit, and it's free (no gatekeeper desk soliciting donations either, just walk right in and enjoy). The Saturday Farmer's Market is held outside the rear entrance to the building that houses the museum, so enjoy a nice nosh outside before and/or after your visit."
