One of my favorite morning’s at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas 2024. The American Avocet’s eloquence and synchronicity are a site to behold as they move as one across the water. Port Aransas, Texas https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_avocet

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the incredible diversity of birdlife and the unique wildlife encounters, including the famous flamingo and resident alligator. The boardwalks are praised for providing excellent access and views, though parking can be limited and the proximity to a wastewater treatment plant can sometimes lead to an odor. Despite the heat and occasional smell, the natural beauty and abundance of wildlife make it a highly recommended spot for nature lovers.

"This place is absolutely amazing - even when it's in the 90s and the humidity is in the 70s. Way too hot and very little shade. We saw Ibis, Stilts, Coot, Laughing Gulls, Herons (the tri-color!), Gallinules, Roseate Spoonbill, Egrets, and lots of other birds. There weren't too many folks there so it was nice. It is right next to the landfill (was it built on the landfill?!), so a little stinky - but amazing. I would make it a place to go if you are a birder. If you just want to walk it has nice wooden piers and paths. A calm place in the backwaters!"

"This is a beautiful natural preserve at the end of a long curving road to the right of the ferry landing at Aransas Pass. It is a good place for birders. I saw a pelican, flamingo, egrets, ibis ducks, barn swallows, and great tailed grackles. There are two long boardwalks with observation towers. It is a peaceful place to take pictures."

Annette Olmsted

"Visiting on Sunday, we found the parking lot quite small, perhaps accommodating around ten vehicles. Overflow parking was necessary on the grassy area across from the construction site. This area was alive with the flutter and calls of numerous small birds and shorebirds. Among them, I spotted a vibrant Andean flamingo(with a black color and wing tips and beak), a striking male black-throated green warbler, and a beautiful Lincoln's sparrow, alongside an egrets and busy sandpipers. Our half-mile walk along the trail led us past a lively pond, where we enjoyed watching many fish leaping from the water's surface."
