Being an adult orphan, with no living family, I’ve always carved out space and belonging. When that gets tiresome, I think of animals like Mina who do the same, who choose bravery and love despite a past of rejection and hurt. May we all be a little more vulnerable to make room for love. ❤️ Thank you Point Arena Lighthouse staff for being Mina’s chosen family. #lighthouse #pointareana #arenamina #...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Point Arena Lighthouse for its majestic views and historical significance. The climb to the top is a highlight, offering breathtaking panoramas. However, some find the admission fees a bit steep, and customer service can be inconsistent. The persistent coastal winds are also a common point of mention. InstagramReddit

"Beautiful setting, majestic views. Worth the effort. We drove up from Bodega Bay. The trip up and back was a little scary in some places because of the switchbacks and hairpin turns. Please be careful and let your passengers enjoy the view. I don't think we will ever forget that trip. Just exhilarating and amazing, still buzzing about the views and I bet I make a poster out of one of the pics we took at Point Arena lighthouse. Just a beautiful place."

"We visited but didn't spend the night. I noticed some semi-aged bungalows on site, so maybe that's an option; not sure. There is a full Fresnel lens on display in the museum, like 6 feet tall. Very cool. Bring a sweatshirt - the wind never pauses!"

Paul Bonnette

"A bit pricey to visit, having to pay per person to enter then pay to climb up the lighthouse. We chose not to enter and enjoy from the overlook outside the entrance. It was convenient to have a portable potty to use outside the entrance but it needed to be badly serviced and cleaned."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Point Arena Lighthouse

First lit in 1870, the Point Arena Lighthouse stands as a testament to maritime history on the rugged Northern California coast. It was originally built to guide ships along this treacherous stretch of the Pacific. The original structure was tragically destroyed in the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but a new, even taller lighthouse was constructed and has been guiding mariners ever since. Instagram+1

Today, the lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark and is maintained by a dedicated non-profit organization. Visitors can explore the museum, which houses a magnificent Fresnel lens, and learn about the lives of the lightkeepers and the vital role the lighthouse played in maritime safety. The preservation efforts ensure that this iconic structure continues to inspire awe and educate future generations. InstagramReddit

Experiencing the Climb

The ascent to the top of the Point Arena Lighthouse is an experience in itself. With 144 steps winding upwards, it's a physical journey that rewards visitors with unparalleled views. The narrow, circular staircase is a classic feature of many historic lighthouses, and here, it culminates in a balcony offering 360-degree vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding coastline. Instagram+1

Be prepared for the final steps, which require climbing backward – a standard safety measure for lighthouses of this design. While it might seem daunting, the staff, like Benjamin mentioned by visitors, are often on hand to offer guidance and ensure a safe experience. The effort is well worth it for the breathtaking scenery and the sense of accomplishment. Reddit

These charming accommodations offer a unique opportunity to live within the grounds of this iconic landmark, waking up to the sound of the ocean and the majestic presence of the lighthouse. TikTok

These rentals provide a peaceful retreat and a chance to soak in the atmosphere of the Mendocino coast. It's an ideal option for couples or travelers seeking a memorable and romantic getaway, offering a different perspective on the lighthouse beyond a day visit. Instagram
