What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Gasparilla Island Swing Bridge a charming gateway to the island, though the toll and pass system can be a point of contention for some. While the bridge openings are a unique experience, potential red tide conditions can detract from the natural beauty.
"Some times you need to be patient and wait for the boats to go and other times it's smooth sailing across the bridge. It cost $6 per vehicle. So either have the proper cash or have a credit/debt card ready to keep the flow going."
Heather Decoskey
"The GIBA Bridge pass and how you handle it is the lowest kind of business around!!
The minimum payment of somewhat $98.00 is ridiculous itself..and if not used in 12 month-the only way to not loose the balance-is to pay again the minimum amount???!!!
Played that game 3 years ..and just lost over $90.00 today..
That is shady!!!"

"Jan 7th 2025
Red tide was terrible this morning.
The aerosol in the air made us cough before we got on the beach. Then dead fish (mullet) lining the entire high water line of the beach. Would be friendlier of bridge authority to post a big warning BEFORE taking people’s $6."

Navigating the Gasparilla Island Swing Bridge
The bridge's primary function is to allow marine traffic to pass through. When a boat approaches, the bridge will swing open, temporarily halting vehicle traffic. This process, while sometimes requiring patience, is a characteristic experience of visiting Gasparilla Island. The duration of these openings can vary, but they are generally brief, allowing for a smooth transition once the vessel has passed.

Environmental Considerations: Red Tide and Island Health

Posting clear warnings before visitors pay the toll could help manage expectations and prevent disappointment. Being aware of these potential environmental impacts allows visitors to better plan their activities and understand the natural cycles that affect the island's beaches and air quality.
