Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Rosenbach Museum & Library as a hidden gem, highlighting the incredible collection of rare books and manuscripts and the passionate, knowledgeable tour guides. While the intimate setting and historical artifacts are major draws, some found the museum store's 'blind date with a book' offer disappointing.

"I learned a lot in this museum thanks to the knowledgeable tour guide Joe who has a great passion for books and manuscripts! If you prefer a self-guided tour (weekends only), the pamphlet and audio guides are also very helpful. The collection page on the museum website shows you things that are not covered by these guides. Scheduling a research appointment is easy.

The only thing is, please keep in mind that the “blind date with the book” at the museum store is a scam. Each book is sold for $22 and wrapped nicely. I was expecting new unused books, and was happy to pay the overprice for the fun. However, inside the packages are very old, used, secondhand books that you can buy for five dollars maximum elsewhere. The stains and folds really disappointed me. I purchased one book as a gift and am glad that I opened the other package to see what’s inside first. My friend would feel disrespected if I sent her that as a gift. Nevertheless, I still appreciated the idea of a blind box. Other things at the museum store, especially their publications, are super cool and worth checking out."

"This museum was so cool! One of Philadelphia's hidden gems for sure. I was there in January for their Burns Night but wanted to check out the museum itself. I opted for a guided tour. The tour guide knew a lot, but we asked a bunch of questions that she didn't know. I'm already planning on coming back with a friend who'd love it. I got tour tickets in advance, but a few of the people in the group walked in and were able to get tickets for the tour. They have lockers for belongings, which the highly recommended using. I had no problems with mine!"

"One of the very special museum tours I've been a part of. The Rosenbach is small and a bit modest on the inside but the collection of books is incredible. First editions of virtually every major literary work, including original hand-written manuscripts from Conrad, Joyce and Stoker among others. They have the first printed bible and a patent from King Charles the 2nd reopening theaters in London and authorizing women to play on stage for the first time - one of two copies of the patent in existence.

It's a treasure."
