What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking scenery and the unique experience of houseboating on Lake Powell. The opportunity to explore slot canyons and enjoy water sports is a major draw. Some find the water color less appealing than expected, and fluctuating water levels can occasionally impact access.
"We we're traveling with a 16 month old child on her 1st trip to the beach. It was a red flag day, surf was pretty forceful and quite windy. Found this park on Powell Lake only a couple miles away. Water & wind were significantly calmer. The water itself was brownish, but clear. The website for Camp Helen State Park nearby explains that and says its safe. Would be a good place for kayaking or lounging on a swim mattress or other inflatable. There are shade trees and a picnic pavillion. Swing set and restrooms too."
Rick
"Great place to launch paddle boards and cruise down to the Inlet and the beach. Easy access, Plenty of parking, covered areas with picnic tables too."
Georges Outmezguine
"We love coming here to efoil, kayak, paddle board etc sometimes we bring our dogs. A great place to hang out by the water for the day."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For day trips, consider renting a jet ski or a smaller boat for water sports, or opt for a kayak to explore calmer coves. The relatively calm waters in many areas make it suitable for younger children to enjoy swimming and splashing. Always supervise children closely near the water and ensure they wear life jackets.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) when rental prices might be lower. Packing your own food and drinks is essential to save money, as on-lake dining can be pricey. Renting kayaks or paddleboards for a few hours can be a more economical way to explore than a full-day powerboat rental.
💑 Couples & Romantic Getaways
Alternatively, book a stay at one of the lakeside resorts or lodges, like the Marriott's Grand Chateau or the Best Western View of Lake Powell. Enjoy scenic boat tours, explore the canyons hand-in-hand, or simply relax by the water. The dramatic scenery provides a naturally romantic setting.

Houseboating: The Ultimate Lake Powell Experience
When planning a houseboat trip, booking well in advance is crucial, as rentals are highly sought after, especially during the summer months. Consider the size of your group and the amenities you desire. Most houseboats come equipped with kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping quarters, allowing for a comfortable and self-sufficient adventure. Remember to stock up on groceries and fuel before departing from the marina, as services on the lake are limited.
Navigating a houseboat requires some familiarity, but rental companies provide orientation and instructions. The experience offers a unique perspective on the dramatic desert landscape, allowing you to anchor in quiet bays and truly disconnect. It's an ideal way to experience the full grandeur of Lake Powell with family and friends.
Exploring Lake Powell's Slot Canyons
Popular canyons include Labyrinth Canyon, Forgotten Canyon, and Face Canyon, each offering unique formations and photographic opportunities. Paddling through these corridors feels like entering another world, with smooth, undulating rock faces in shades of red, orange, and tan. The acoustics within the canyons can also be fascinating, amplifying the sounds of your paddle strokes and the gentle flow of water.
When exploring slot canyons, it's essential to be aware of changing weather conditions, as flash floods can occur. Always check the forecast and be prepared to exit if necessary. The experience is incredibly rewarding, offering a chance to connect with the natural artistry of Lake Powell in a truly memorable way.
Water Levels and Their Impact
However, the lake has seen some recovery. Understanding the current water level is crucial for planning your trip. Low water levels can mean longer walks to the water's edge at some marinas or the need to use alternative launch points. Conversely, higher levels can open up more areas for boating and exploration, including previously inaccessible coves.
It's always advisable to check the official Glen Canyon National Recreation Area website or the Bureau of Reclamation for the most up-to-date information on water levels and any associated advisories or changes in access before your visit. This will help ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience on the lake.
