What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find the Palm Springs Windmills to be an impressive sight, with many enjoying the educational aspect of the tours and the unique desert landscape. The opportunity to get up close to the massive turbines is a highlight for many, though some feel the self-drive tour can be a bit pricey if photography is the sole objective.
"Had an awesome time, the sights were beautiful! The tour guides were very welcoming and knowledgeable. Looking forward to coming back soon with some friends."

"We liked our tour and enjoyed learning about wind turbines and getting up closer to them. We felt the self-drive tour was a bit pricey but we still enjoyed it. After stop 10 keep driving and turn left and go to Windmill Market and buy a Date Shake. They are delicious!!!!!!!"

"Every time I would drive by these Windmills on the way to Palm Springs I was always curious to see them up close and learn more. Finally I decided to take a tour and see what it was all about.
The tour is $49 for two adults in their car, kids 12 and under are free. Each additional adult in the car is $10 per person.
I recommend downloading the ‘Palm Spring Windmill Tours’ app. You will need it to do the tour properly. (They have WiFi at the ‘tour center’ that you can use to download the app as well).
Tip: If you only want to take photos of the windmills you can do so outside of the fence (they say that it’s for insurance reasons). If you’re not interested in renewable energy or wind turbines this is a good choice for you because you’ll find the tour quite boring.
The tour begins with being checked in at the Tour Center. (We purchased our tickets here as a walk in instead of buying them ahead of time). Here you’ll find some informative signs along the wall as well as watch a 13 minute video about Windmills and renewable energy. After you’re done exploring the Tour Center you can get into your vehicle, open the app and drive around the property. You will drive slowly along a dirt road. We would pull over and listen to the audio guide and then get out and take photos.
Definitely loved the ‘date shake’ they recommended we grab after the tour. It was our first ones ever so we’re glad we tried ‘the best’."

The Engineering Marvel of Wind Turbines
Visitors on tours learn about the evolution of wind turbine technology, from early designs to the modern, highly efficient models seen today. The farm is one of the largest onshore wind farms in the United States, showcasing the potential of wind power in arid regions. The educational aspect of the tours, often delivered via an app, provides insights into how wind is converted into usable energy, making it an interesting experience for those curious about sustainable technology.
For photographers and enthusiasts, the visual impact of hundreds of turbines stretching across the landscape is undeniable. The interplay of light and shadow on the blades and towers, especially during sunrise and sunset, creates dramatic and memorable images. It’s a unique blend of industrial design and natural beauty, a testament to human innovation in harmony with the environment.
Capturing the Iconic Palm Springs Windmills
For unique perspectives, consider the advice from Instagram Reels: use Google Maps to find the Amtrak Station and then venture onto the sand for creative angles. This allows for shots that place you closer to the scale of the turbines. While you can see many windmills from public roads, a guided tour, particularly the self-drive option, allows you to get closer and provides context through narration.
When composing your shots, experiment with different focal lengths. Wide-angle lenses can emphasize the vastness of the wind farm, while telephoto lenses can isolate individual turbines or capture details of their mechanics. Look for leading lines created by the rows of turbines or the desert terrain to guide the viewer's eye. The contrast between the man-made structures and the natural desert environment is a recurring theme that makes for compelling photography.
