Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Orange County Zoo for its affordability, charming atmosphere, and focus on native animals. It's considered a perfect, relaxed outing for families with young children, offering close encounters with wildlife and a delightful petting zoo experience. While small, its value and location within Irvine Regional Park make it a highly recommended spot for a budget-friendly day of fun.

"This is my first time going to the Orange County Zoo, and compared to the zoos I have visited, the Orange County Zoo experience was below my expectations. There aren't many animals there. The zoo is inside the beautiful Irvine Regional Park; it’s the perfect size for a relaxing, family-friendly visit. We saw mountain lions, turtles, snakes, black bears, coyotes, Jacob's sheep with four horns, and even a bobcat—up close but in thoughtfully designed, naturalistic enclosures.

The zoo is clean, well-maintained, and super affordable (admission for adults is two dollars, and for children from two years old and under, it's free). The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and there were several interactive areas for kids to learn and explore. We especially loved the barnyard area, where children could play with the goats.

It’s a short and sweet outing, great for young kids, or a relaxing afternoon in the park. We followed it up with a picnic, train ride, and paddle boats nearby. ( The paddle boat is $22 for 30 minutes. It sits, two adults and one kid."

"This is a small size place with some animals to see. It’s located inside the Irvine park and you can drive through an entrance to park right next to the entrance. It’s not expensive to enter and the area is very shaded so it’s nice walking around. We did encounter a peacock strolling through when driving in so be careful but it was also fun to see. We saw that some of the enclosures had water running through fit the animals. There is a petting part of the zoo and they have machines to get food as well as washing areas to clean hands. There’s also some statues and photo spots which were fun. There is also a place to buy snacks right outside the zoo entrance with an area to eat. It was a nice little visit."

The Orange County Zoo is small but full of charm! Perfect for families, with well-kept habitats and a great variety of native animals. Our visit was relaxing and educational—kids loved the close-up views of the black bear, mountain lion, and playful otters. Affordable admission and friendly staff make this a must-visit when in the area."

Understanding the OC Zoo's Focus

The Orange County Zoo distinguishes itself by focusing primarily on native Southwestern animals and plants. This curated collection allows visitors to learn about the local ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits the region. Instead of a vast array of exotic animals, the zoo offers a more intimate and educational experience with creatures like mountain lions, black bears, coyotes, and various reptiles. TikTokInstagram

This focus on native species means the enclosures are often designed to mimic natural habitats, providing a more enriching environment for the animals and a more realistic viewing experience for guests. The zoo's size, at 8 acres, contributes to this intimate feel, allowing visitors to get relatively close to the exhibits. Instagram

Beyond the permanent residents, the zoo also features a popular petting zoo area, where children can interact with farm animals like goats. This hands-on experience is a highlight for many families, offering a fun and memorable way to connect with animals. TikTokInstagram
