Reviews Summary

Old Rag Mountain is a highly rewarding, albeit very strenuous, hike celebrated for its challenging rock scrambles and breathtaking summit views. While many find the effort immensely satisfying, visitors must be well-prepared physically and secure necessary day-use tickets well in advance. The lack of cell service and the demanding terrain are common considerations.

"One of my all time favorite hikes in VA. I’ve hiked it in the snow, rain, sunshine, and heavy fog

It’s a great workout and the rock scramble is not the easiest but arriving at the summit makes it all worth it

Here are some photos i captured while hiking old rag recently with my Leica 📷"

Jordan Miller

"A really enjoyable 9.4 mile hike, with a decent boulder scramble towards the summit. Awesome views on a clear day. Must book tickets and have a Shenendoah National Park vehicle permit. Parking is ample with bathrooms. National park staff were very friendly."

Graham Lovell

"This hike is absolutely stunning! You really need to be physically and mentally prepared though. While All Trails and the NPS site indicate “rock scrambles,” there are some spots where you need to do some climbing. There’s one way to get up if you decide to do the loop (clockwise) since you can’t turn around at the rock scrambles once you get a bit in, but you can do the hike counterclockwise and head up some stair-like features. My watch indicated the hike was about 9 miles and it was VERY strenuous. Please be physically prepared and bring plenty of water. And if you’re hoping for cell service, it’s nonexistent. This is one of my favorite hikes I’ve ever done and a must see!

P.S. this is a bit of a late review as I did it in the fall. Would not recommend in the summer months unless you love the heat."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Old Rag Rock Scramble

The rock scramble is the most distinctive and challenging part of the Old Rag Mountain hike. It's not a technical rock climb, but it requires significant physical exertion, including the use of your upper body strength to pull yourself up and over large boulders. Many hikers describe it as a fun, albeit strenuous, puzzle to navigate. InstagramReddit+1

It's crucial to assess your comfort level with heights and enclosed spaces before attempting this section. While there are ways to bypass some of the more difficult parts, the main ascent is designed to be tackled head-on. Proper footwear with good grip is essential, and moving slowly and deliberately will help ensure safety. InstagramReddit

Pro-tip: If you're hiking clockwise, there's no turning back once you're deep into the scramble. Some hikers prefer to tackle the scramble in reverse (counter-clockwise) for a different experience, though this is less common and may involve navigating down steep sections. Reddit

Planning Your Old Rag Hike: Tickets and Timing

Securing a timed-entry day-use ticket is non-negotiable for hiking Old Rag between March 1 and November 30. These tickets are released five days prior to the hike date and are notoriously difficult to obtain, often selling out within minutes. It's vital to be online and ready to book the moment they become available. Instagram

Beyond the ticket, you'll also need to pay the Shenandoah National Park entrance fee or have a valid park pass. Parking at the Old Rag Trailhead is limited and fills up extremely early, often before 8 AM on busy days. Many visitors opt for an early morning start, sometimes as early as 6 AM, to secure a parking spot and beat the worst of the crowds and heat. TikTokReddit

Consider visiting on a weekday if possible, as weekends and holidays see significantly higher visitor numbers. The hike itself can take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours, so factor this into your planning, especially regarding daylight hours and your return journey. Instagram+1

What to Expect: The Old Rag Experience

Old Rag Mountain is more than just a hike; it's an immersive adventure that tests your limits and rewards you with unparalleled beauty. The 9.4-mile loop trail is renowned for its challenging terrain, featuring steep ascents, rocky paths, and the iconic rock scramble that requires both physical strength and mental fortitude. InstagramReddit+1

Many hikers describe the experience as incredibly rewarding, with the summit offering breathtaking 360-degree views that make the strenuous effort worthwhile. The feeling of accomplishment upon reaching the top is palpable. However, it's essential to be realistic about the difficulty; it's not a hike for the faint of heart or those unprepared for a significant physical challenge. TikTokInstagramReddit

Be prepared for limited to no cell service throughout the hike, so downloading offline maps and informing someone of your plans is crucial. The weather can also change rapidly, so packing layers and being aware of conditions is advised. Reddit
