Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Charnley-Norwood House for its significant architectural importance, highlighting the early designs of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. The house's remarkable restoration after Hurricane Katrina is a frequently mentioned positive aspect, with guides often commended for their engaging and knowledgeable tours. Some visitors note that advance booking is essential and that the house still requires ongoing funding for preservation.

"Sullivan/Wright bungalow design on the Mississippi Gulf coast. Saved and restored following significant damage from Hurricane Katrina's storm surge. The home still needs some attention, tough to fund under the current state government funding climate. The neighboring "guest cottage" has been purchased by a private owner, restored, and added onto. Scheduling an interior tour requires a long lead time due to very reduced staff and volunteer availability. Well worth a visit to see the earliest design work of Wright, while he was still in Louis Sullivan's practice."

"Fantastic tour, Jeff did a wonderful job of explaining the history of the house, it’s many trials during the years and it’s rightful place in American Architecture. The beautifully restored interior and exterior, including the period appropriate gardens are a must see in the lovely area of Ocean Springs. Plenty of places to dine and shop nearby too."

"I was watching a documentary on Netflix about Frank Lloyd Wright and remembered I HAD BEEN IN ONE OF HIS DESIGNS. When Katrina hit, a group of 4 from our church (New Life Church in Brighton TN) drove down with chainsaws, plastic trash bags, tarps, water and food to cook for the hardest hit and ended up in the driveway of the house to the west. We setup camp and started cooking. We drove around cutting up fallen trees and clearing access for people and feeding the neighborhood but this was our camp. I remember we pulled a sunfish sailboat out of a tree next to the garage/shed in the back. It was 10 feet high easy. After we got it down, someone that was either overseeing the home or the owner at the time walked us through it and told us of the significance of it. They were super nice and appreciative wish I had taken pictures or could remember names. I do remember them complaining that their insurance was arguing trying to say it was storm surge and not hurricane damage to get out of paying for it. Odd what you remember. All I can say is you should have seen it that day. Ya'll did a great job bringing it back."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Architectural Significance: Sullivan and Wright

The Charnley-Norwood House stands as a pivotal example of early 20th-century American architecture. Designed in the 1890s by Louis Sullivan, a towering figure in the Chicago School of architecture, the house embodies his philosophy of 'form follows function.' It features Sullivan's characteristic long, low profile, a design that harmonizes with its natural surroundings, a concept he termed 'organic architecture.' This approach was groundbreaking for its time, moving away from ornate Victorian styles towards a more streamlined and integrated aesthetic. Instagram

Crucially, the house also showcases the formative influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, who was a young draftsman in Sullivan's office during its design. While Sullivan is credited as the principal architect, Wright's emerging ideas about residential design can be seen in the home's spatial arrangements and its connection to the landscape. Visiting the Charnley-Norwood House offers a unique glimpse into the collaborative and evolutionary process between these two architectural giants, making it a must-see for enthusiasts of American design history.
