"20250707 This visitors center is closed for the season, the sign said. There was construction while I was there. The trail started to the left of the visitors center. When it branches out, you can turn right to go to a platform to see nature, go straight to the right and down to the beach about 0.t mile hike, or go straight to the left up the steps which would take you up to massive stairs that lead to the platform with a view. My pups chose not to go up those stairs, and we turned around and went to the beach instead. This side of the beach was not busy, mainly because of the hike to get to the beach. I doubt people would want to carry their beach gears and hike the trail to the beach."

"We spent the day at Hoffmaster State Park with our grandson, starting with the stairs to the top of the dunes with platforms for resting and enjoying wonderful views of Lake Michigan. The Gillette Visitor Center was a huge hit with friendly staff and a super tame 32-yr-old black snake that we got to touch! We learned a lot in a short time and the interactive exhibit was interesting to a 6-yr-old. Then we spent a couple of hrs teaching him to body-surf. A perfect summer day and we didn't spend anything."

"Wonderful visitors center, great hiking trails ( however the wooden markers look like they may be getting re-vamped so we ran into a few un marked poles) and beautiful sights. It is worth the visit if you are in the area or camping at Hoffmaster State Park. A little off the beaten path , but user and family friendly."
