What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Smith College Museum of Art for its free admission and diverse, impressive collection spanning various eras and cultures. The comfortable benches are a highlight for extended contemplation. However, some reviews mention a perceived lack of staff engagement and a disorganized display of artworks, leading to a less cohesive viewing experience for some.
"A small museum to visit, It’s free to all! Many people mentioned about their paintings which are very true. But I noticed the benches in the exhibition hall are very unique and very comfortable to sit on. I spent a half day there and tried all the benches in my pictures.
There are a few art works triggered my deeper thinking on how we look at things, from different angles you will get different conclusion for the same object. Your perceptions are much influenced by people around you, big time! Be very aware about that!"

"Nice small art museum with an impressive range of art from throughout history, and around the world. I especially enjoyed the medieval art collection, and the ancient Greek pottery. Although there were just a few pots on display, this allowed me to really look at them closely and appreciate them more. (A big contrast to the British museum in London, where there were so many pots my eyes just glazed over😊). Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area."

Exploring the Collections
Particular pieces that have resonated with visitors include Georgia O'Keeffe's work and Mayhew. The museum also features artist-designed restrooms, adding an unexpected artistic element to the visitor experience. The intimate scale of some displays, like the ancient Greek pottery, allows for close appreciation, a contrast to larger, more overwhelming museum experiences.

These rotating displays bring new perspectives and often feature contemporary artists, providing a dynamic element to the museum's offerings. The Visitor Experience: Comfort and Critique
However, the visitor experience isn't universally lauded. One detailed review pointed to a perceived lack of staff presence and engagement, describing staff as 'elsewhere' and their interactions as bordering on 'harassment' regarding personal items like a purse. This reviewer felt the staff were not actively welcoming or informative, suggesting missed opportunities for engagement and employment for individuals with disabilities.
Despite these critiques, the museum's free admission and the opportunity to explore a diverse collection in a less overwhelming setting than larger institutions are significant draws. The advice to wander and discover, as suggested for Northampton in general, also applies to the museum itself, encouraging visitors to embrace the unexpected juxtapositions within the galleries.
