What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Deer Prairie Creek Preserve South is praised for its excellent kayaking and biking opportunities, with a convenient launch and expansive trail system. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere for hiking and nature walks. However, some trails can be overgrown, and the lack of shade and potential for insects require preparation.
"I've been to Deer Prairie Creek Preserve South twice so far. And I foresee many more outings there in my future! This place is great. Kayak/ Canoe ramps. Fishing, and Hiking. Both my outings were hiking. The first was a 7 miler. Me and my 4 legged companion stayed primarily on the Alphabet trail and did about a mile and a half on some side trails. Our second outing was an 8.5 miler. 4.5 miles of which were side trails and the rest alphabet trail.
Some things to consider and some lessons learned from my 2 outings. The road into the main parking area is about ¾ mile dirt/ gravel. That could be a bit rough on smaller vehicles. During the weekend, the alphabet trail has quite a few mountain bikers. So be mindful that they can sneak up on you pretty quick! When your venturing off into the side trails. Id recommend definitely take a park map. And brush up on your land navigation skills! Most of the trails from where weve been are marked. But there are some small very unimproved trails with no markings. Also, if youre gonna hit those smaller trails wear mosquito/ tick repellent. We didn't on our first outing. Brought a couple of them home!
I can't wait to go back!"

"This is a great place to launch a kayak. Parking and portage are very close and accessible. There are a lot of trails here but I wouldn't say it's a great place to hike. The trails are well maintained but wide open. Not much shade along the way. Definitely bring some water. It's a better place for mountain biking. Spotted one alligator just below the dam."

"Nice expansive park. Really good for kayaking. Lots of hiking but be advised in late summer or fall they are exceptionally overgrown. The "alphabet trail" (follows the letters) which runs due south to north is mostly passable with long pants. All other trails are more like bush whacking. Need to do more trial maintenance throughout the year to keep this q usable park year round."
