To celebrate the beginning of the end of 2025 and the first winter storm of the season, I traveled to Shawnee Lookout, a park that has been on my list for quite some time. Conveniently, it is part of the Great Parks system, and I already have a permit to enter.
Five pillars of pure cement and industrial dominance rise on the horizon as I drive deeper into the park, almost like an iconic scene worthy of a place in a guidebook. Along the main road are shelters, trails, and other curiosities. At the end of the path lies the Miami Fort Trail, the one I am most eager to explore.
The immediate surroundings are virtually empty—of humans, that is. I notice droppings and tracks left by recent wildlife; judging by their size and shape, they likely belong to a deer.
The path is mostly dirt with patches of gravel. Its moderate elevation makes it more than a simple walk but not a strenuous climb. Small rewards scatter along the way: lookouts that offer panoramic views of the river.
The trail is in good condition, but I can't say the same for the wooden structures such as signs or benches. It takes me about twenty minutes to complete the loop. On my way out, I catch eyes with a dog walker.
Overall, I’m happy with this short excursion. The trail is enjoyable, and the views are breathtaking."

"This was a great walk! The dogs loved it and so did we! The view from the lookout point was beautiful! There were also many picnic areas and a playground within the park. The walk to the lookout point does have some steep sections and some poison ivy in areas. But highly recommend checking it out"

"Hiked the Little Turtle Trail. Beautiful well maintained trail. Easy, good for families with kids or anyone looking for a leisurely hike. Views are a little overgrown, but still beautiful. Almost all of the trail is shaded so it's a good hike even when it feels too hot outside. Benches to rest at the top as well. My fitness tracker said the hike was 1.82 miles with 310 feet of elevation gain, took me 38 minutes walking at a brisk pace."
