"My experience with the Victim Protective Order (VPO) process at the Cleveland County Courthouse was deeply disappointing and disheartening. Despite submitting over 270 pages of evidence documenting sexual, psychological, and financial abuse, the judge openly stated she “only had five minutes” and instructed me to give her a quick summary instead of reviewing the documentation.
I presented clear information regarding unauthorized tracking of myself and my children, along with evidence that police reports were incomplete, misclassified, and even missing signed statements I had made. None of this evidence was ever meaningfully reviewed. Despite the seriousness of the situation, my request for a protective order was denied.
To make matters worse, the hearing included victim shaming. At one point, the Judge Childers even asked if there was something I was doing in the home that would cause my teenage son to view pornography involving defecation and urination on women — a completely inappropriate and offensive question to pose to a victim seeking protection.
I also cannot ignore the role that race and bias may have played in this decision. My husband is white, and I am a woman of color. Despite being educated and accomplished, it was clear that my words and my evidence did not carry the same weight. I believe that his standing as a Caucasian male in Cleveland County worked in his favor, while my position as a woman of color worked against me.
The entire process left me feeling dismissed, unheard, and retraumatized. The VPO system here does not appear to provide meaningful protection for victims, no matter how much evidence is brought forward.
Additionally, my husband’s attorney presented illegally obtained evidence in the hearing and when I brought that to the attention of the judge’s secretary (who was extremely unprofessional and rude) it was not even taken into consideration.
My husband is involved in illegal activity and both the Norman Police Department all the way up to the DA know, yet nothing is being done to assist me or protect my children."
