Leonard Knight spent 30 YEARS perfecting Salvation Mountain 🤯 🚗 BUT…it’s a trek to get here because it’s SO far out of the way in the middle of the desert!!! 🎨 Sadly, it has become quite run down with massive cracks and peeling in the paint. 🚫 Much of the display is closed including the stairs that lead up to the mountain top and the unique interior corridors 😷 THE SMELL!!! Tbh, it smelled like ...

Salvation Mountain is an art environment created by the late Leonard Knight in the Southern California desert about an hour outside of Joshua Tree. The mountain, made of adobe bricks, is Knight’s tribute to God and universal love. While I personally left the church years ago, visiting this site still brought up a lot of emotions and was a very healing experience. Leonard’s artistic vision requ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by Salvation Mountain's unique folk art and spiritual ambiance, often describing it as a 'must-see' and a 'spiritual journey.' The vibrant colors and the dedication of its creator, Leonard Knight, leave a lasting impression. However, the remote desert location, rough roads, and intense heat are significant drawbacks for many, and some find the art's condition to be deteriorating.

"Extraordinary experience!
There’s not much to do, but lots of Art to see - could seem scary but feel very safe on the contrary.
The staff were friendly and happy to chat (they also gifted us some postcards!)
Remember to bring some water as can become very hot and humid in summer time."

Costanza Stornello

"Went during Labor day weekend and it was not disappointed. The only bad this is that it was very very hot. The place is not big but there plenty of other stuff to see while you are there too. Always bring plenty of water n sun screen. Recommend go here during when it cooler season . There also two portable bathroom here too."

"Huell Howser would be proud!

Visiting this small painted hill in the middle of nowhere is a spiritual journey. Coming around that last bend in the road, it appears. You know you have arrived.

This was one man's singular mission. He had something to say, something he wanted the world to know, and he found a unique way of expressing this, in the desert wasteland east of the Salton Sea. It is to be seen. For me, it was on my bucket list.

Be aware. The road out there is not as you would imagine. It is worse. It has not been maintained in many decades.

The docent who greeted all visitors was kind, friendly, and helpful. I took his photo with his permission.

I met a lot of good people there."
