What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Newport Cliff Walk for its stunning combination of breathtaking ocean views and the grandeur of historic Gilded Age mansions. While the paved sections are easy, some find the rocky southern portions adventurous. Parking and crowds can be challenging, especially during peak times.
"At the cliff walk today 9/22/25 for the first time the walkway past the beautiful mansions and homes was was amazing but the views that you get of the ocean, the beach and the area was just fantastic. Had a great time with family. We’re definitely recommend a calm quiet walk with some people around. It can get busy at times but overall a worthwhile trip."

"A great walk/hike to see the beauty of the beaches and the old mansions in the area. The walk is both easy and challenging and some spots. If you walk the whole thing you will have to traverse areas with rocks and no path. Strong sea breezes keep you cool in the Summer air. Parking can be challenging, it was $35 to park at the beach."

"Visited June 2025 | Walked ~2.5 miles
The Cliff Walk in Newport is an unforgettable coastal experience that combines stunning ocean views with historic mansions and natural beauty. We spent around 2 to 3 hours walking a portion of the trail, starting near The Breakers and heading south.
The views are incredible—crashing waves on one side, and grand Gilded Age mansions on the other. It’s a perfect blend of nature and architecture. There are plenty of spots to stop and take photos or just enjoy the breeze and sound of the water.
The path itself is mostly paved and easy to walk, especially the first half. The southern portion becomes rockier and less maintained, which adds a bit of adventure (wear good walking shoes!). If you’re not up for climbing over rocks, you can easily turn back after the paved portion—still very rewarding.
What we loved:
• Beautiful oceanfront views
• Peaceful and not too crowded
• Access to several historic estates
• Great spot for photos and fresh air
Tips:
• Go early in the day or closer to sunset for the best light and fewer people.
• Parking near Easton’s Beach or Forty Steps is convenient.
• Bring water, sunscreen, and wear proper footwear.
• Some parts have no railing, so be cautious if you’re with kids or afraid of heights.
Cliff Walk is a must-do in Newport. Whether you’re a hiker, a history lover, or just looking for a peaceful seaside stroll, this walk offers something for everyone."
