Château sur-Mer in Newport, RI Before the Gilded Age dazzled Newport, Château-sur-Mer set the stage for elite society. Built in 1852 for China trade magnate William Wetmore, this High Victorian masterpiece became the heart of lavish parties and social prestige. Chateau-sur-Mer’s “dining” room Unlike any other Newport mansion, the dining room at Château-sur-Mer feels like a carved masterpiece—an ode to craftsmanship. Wrapped in rich, hand-carved woodwork from floor to ceiling, it’s a striking departure from the pastel marbles and gold leaf seen elsewhere. A true celebration of Victorian opulence and artistry. #chateausurmer #newport #newportmansions #n...

This reminds me of a joke I heard once: “Why don’t rich people ever need to buy furniture?” “Because it’s inherited.” Haha… ha… ummm … Anyway, really wishing I inherited Château-sur-Mer in charming #newport RI. Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Château-sur-Mer for its unique Victorian charm, intricate woodwork, and intellectually rich atmosphere, offering a quieter, more reflective experience compared to other Newport mansions. While some find it less spectacular than larger estates, its historical depth and well-maintained grounds are consistently highlighted as major draws.

"Visited Chateau-Sur-Mer on Saturday, 6/21/25. Arrived a few minutes before it opened, and were the only ones there, besides one other person. This tour was self-guided, which we generally prefer, so that we can proceed at our own pace. At the info desk, they checked our tickets, which we had purchased online and printed out at home. There, we also obtained a printed copy of the tour narrative- we like this better than getting the app and wearing headphones.
Each room has sign, so that you can then read the corresponding history and architectural details. It was fascinating to see and to imagine how the occupants lived, and to take in the decor that was popular at the time. If you have any questions, the attendants are are helpful and well informed. We spent about forty five minutes in the house.
We then spent an equal amount of time wandering the lovely, well-maintained grounds. Most of the trees are labeled as to type, which I appreciated. If you've never done so, I suggest spending a few moments under one of the weeping beech trees. We also saw the croquet pitch and the moon gate.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable visit."

"Great place to visit. Definitely do the app tour (bring your earbuds). This house is much different stylewise than the other mansions available to tour; it's also a lot less busy than the Breakers."

K Lizotte

"A wonderful Mansion less visited. Stained glass and wallpaper abound. Be sure to do the grounds tour. The trees are absolutely breathtaking."
