What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Serendipity 3 is celebrated for its iconic Frozen Hot Chocolate and whimsical, colorful decor that creates a magical dining experience. While many praise the desserts and the fun atmosphere, some reviews note that the savory food can be inconsistent and the restaurant can feel cramped and touristy, especially compared to its past glory.
"I had a great time! Randy, our server, is the ABSOLUTE best. Come enjoy Randy and the crew. And shout out to the manager for blessing us with a little extra something! I love this place! And now, I love Frozen Hot Chocolate! 🤩
A serendipitous adventure for sure! 💙💙💙💙"

"I booked a table at the Serendipity 3 Upper East Side restaurant for dinner on my wife's actual 60th birthday this evening as we really enjoyed our last visit there 10 years ago for her 50th birthday.
Although we arrived 20 minutes earlier than our 5:15pm slot that I'd booked online, we were shown to a table within a few minutes. There's very little space between tables in the very small & cramped restaurant, so don't expect any privacy as we could clearly hear and follow the conversations of the diners on both the tables either side of us.
Our super friendly server Randy asked if we were at the restaurant for any special occasion and my wife told him it was her 60th birthday without realising I'd already put all this in the 'what's the occassion?' section of their online booking form. He also asked if we had any allergies, which again I had already said we had none in the 'Any allergies or restrictions?' section of their online booking form. So clearly the servers don't see or don't bother to read the information provided online by their customers, rendering it a complete waste of our time!!!
The birthday girl had the American cheeseburger with fries, which was OK. I had the Grandma Holt's fried chicken sandwich with a pot of tea. The fried chicken was a bit dry, the bun was a bit stale and I found the fries to be a bit too salty. My wife was really looking forward to the superb peanut butter cheesecake dessert we enjoyed sooo much on our last visit. However, it was no longer on the menu so she had to settle for the Ultimate Creme Cheesecake, which came with side servings of hot fudge & strawberry sauce.
Our fabulous server Randy put a candle on the top of my wife's cheesecake, lit it and encouraged everyone in the restaurant to sing happy birthday, which made her feel special. Whilst we were dining in the restaurant there were 4 other people celebrating their birthdays as well.
There's a photographer at the restaurant now, who went around every table taking photographs of customers and returning later trying to sell commemorative prints, which I found a bit tacky and touristy - not something I'd expect at a high end restaurant.
The decor in the restaurant looked very tired and we certainly didn't enjoy our meal there this time, compared to our exceptional experience 10 years ago. I feel sadly it's more of a tourist trap now, feeding off the embers of its former glory days, which have long gone. We didn't have any alcoholic drinks with our meal and I left feeling the $100 we spent there could have been better spent in one of the hundreds of exceptional restaurants in NYC for the special occasion of my wife's 60th birthday."

"We loved Serendipity!!! I made a reservation online about a week in advance, thank God I did. It was so busy! My husband and I and our 2 girls (ages 6 & 9) loved all our food and desserts! My husband got a bacon cheese hot dog and I got the truffle burger. Both amazing. We all had more fries than we could eat. We also got the frozen hot chocolate to share, and each daughter got 1 scoop of ice cream with a topping, which was also more than they could eat. Despite it being packed and needing a reservation, our food came out super quickly. I was really impressed by that. And our waiter, Leo, was SO friendly, which made the overall vibe amazing. We hope to be back next time we visit the city!!"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Key tips for families: Book your reservation far in advance, as it gets incredibly busy. Consider sharing the generously portioned desserts to manage costs and let everyone try a bit of everything. The lively atmosphere means kids can be kids without too much worry.
💰 Budget Travelers
Budget-friendly strategies: Opt to share a large dessert instead of ordering individual entrees and desserts. Focus on one iconic item like the Frozen Hot Chocolate and enjoy the atmosphere. Look for lunch specials if available, though these are less common for dessert-focused establishments.
💖 Couples & Special Occasions
For couples: Make a reservation and mention any special occasion (like a birthday) when booking. The staff, particularly servers like Randy mentioned in reviews, often go the extra mile to make celebrations memorable, including singing 'Happy Birthday' with a candle on a dessert.
Deep Dives
In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Iconic Frozen Hot Chocolate
Many visitors come specifically for this signature item, and it's a popular choice for sharing. While some reviews suggest the quality might vary, the sheer novelty and indulgence make it a must-try for first-time visitors. It’s the perfect sweet ending or even a meal in itself for those with a serious sweet tooth.
Pro-tip: If you're not a fan of overly sweet drinks, consider ordering it with less whipped cream or asking for a side of chocolate syrup to customize your sweetness level.
A Family-Friendly Haven
Parents often rave about how their children react to the over-the-top sundaes and the sheer fun of the dining experience. The staff is generally accommodating to families, and the lively environment means that a little bit of kid-induced chaos is usually well-received. It’s a place where creating happy memories is as much a part of the meal as the food itself.
Key for families: Make reservations well in advance, as it can get very busy. Consider sharing desserts to manage costs and ensure everyone gets a taste of something special.
Navigating the Menu: Savory vs. Sweet
However, it's important to manage expectations. Some reviews suggest that while the savory dishes are decent, they might not reach the same heights of culinary excellence as the desserts. The focus is often on the overall experience and the visual appeal, which is certainly delivered. If you're visiting primarily for the savory experience, you might find other restaurants in NYC that offer more refined culinary options.
Recommendation: For the quintessential Serendipity 3 experience, it's often best to enjoy a savory appetizer or main course and then dive headfirst into their legendary dessert offerings. This allows you to sample the best of both worlds without feeling overwhelmed or disappointed.
