What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the NYPL Children's Center as a beautiful and spacious library filled with books and culture for all ages. Many highlight the excellent customer service and engaging programs. However, one reviewer shared a negative experience with a staff member, noting a perceived insensitivity.
"It’s a beautiful library for kids — full of books and culture for children of all ages! We’re from Mexico and visited the library during our trip. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy with your children. We loved it, and so did our toddler!"
Priscila Escoto
"A big and spacious Children's Center. So many books at the height of little ones to pick out and a comfy seating area for them to sit and enjoy."
Jennifer Beecham
"The library itself is nice with ample space and lots of books for children. However, my experience with one particular staff was quite negative:
We brought my son to the children’s center for the first time yesterday. We were doing our own things separately. While I was very quiet in the children’s center waiting for my son, one White female staff around 50 years old in white sweater out of nowhere approached me with a normal volume that everyone around me could hear clearly, and told me to put my cellphone volume down. I don’t know how she got all the idea that I played any videos on my phone while I was in the library, because I was just browsing some posts on my phone, yet she heard something that neither I or anybody around me heard at all and seemed to be “friendly and doing her job” by asking me to put volume down. I was quite confused in the beginning and then told her that I didn’t play any videos at all. She said “Oh, I thought I heard something from there. Maybe it was not you.” I think either she was illusional in hearing me play any video or she is a racist because I am an Asian. I got quite offended by her quick judging and insincere apology. She left. Being very upset by what she said, I left with my family in a few minutes and the person was nowhere to be seen. I have no idea who she was, but this staff in the library definitely is not welcoming or friendly and maybe a racist."
