pov: you just stepped out of penn station onto 7th avenue. you turn left and walk north towards 34th street. the air is sharp and cold, the smell of candied nuts (and a few other unsavory scents) fill the air, and the sounds of the city swirl around you. this is the moment you’ve been waiting for all year long!! you arrived JUST in time for christmas in new york!!! 🎅🏻☃️🏙️🎊🎄❄️✨ shot on iphone 4k ...

Reviews Summary

Penn Station is a highly functional, albeit busy, transit hub that keeps New York moving. While not the most aesthetically pleasing, its convenience for Amtrak, LIRR, NJ Transit, and subway connections is unparalleled. Travelers appreciate the diverse food options and the presence of police ensuring safety, though restroom conditions can be a drawback.

"Penn Station is the hub that keeps New York moving. It’s always full of energy, busy, crowded and maybe not the prettiest station in the world but it’s highly functional for travelers who can use Subway, AmTrak and LIRR services from here to get where they need to go. The food court has a variety of options, from Shake Shack to Raising Cane’s, from Chopt to Playa Bowls and there’s a Walgreens that can pretty much help every needs one may have while waiting to commute or travel around New York! I’m personally here every day and I must say that Pennsylvania Station is safe, with a lot of MTA Police constantly around and clean for the high amount of traffic that passes through daily. It’s I place in town that I love! Don’t expect luxury, especially during rush hours, but Penn Station does the job!"

Ivan Ottavian

"Originally built in 1910 as a station house project for the Pennsylvania and Harlem Railroads, the project was the cornerstone of the New York City Train Service Sector. The original building was demolished in 1963 and was reformed with an expansion for the MTA. By the late 1960s, a new station building had opened, and continues to serve the people of New York City, with upwards of 600,000 coming on the average day.

During my time in New York City, I rode to this station on NJ Transit and was often enamored and flattered at just how impressive and vibrant such an old central station was of this caliber. Nevertheless, coming out of the station, I was immediately surprised by the General appeal and the layout of the station, they have managed to turn this station from just a simple place to breeze through and catch your train in the 1960s decade, the new version of Penn Station features many shops and restaurants from big name brands such as Auntie Anne's, Chick-Fil-a, Hudson News, Dunkin', Insomnia Cookies, and many more places to enjoy in the station.

Getting to the connecting trains was also a simple and self aware process. When it comes to the structure of the station, the 1, 2, and 3 lines operate out of the west, while the A, W, and E lines to the north for example, allowing for connections to other parts of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.
The station could also get crowded at times, as you strive to traverse to your train in the Moynian Train Hall.
The one issue of this station that I must mention unfortunately is the condition of the restrooms. After a long day of travel in Manhattan, or Brooklyn, the one thing you don't want is to have to find a working sink. The problem persisted for me in my first visit after a day in New York, as the sinks failed to work, and only one of the four functioned properly. People tend to also be be lousy with their aim, or forget to flush, leaving a major mess in the area and making the area more undesirable.

I will, for certain return here anytime I come to New York City to admire the charm of travel and the hustle and bustle of the city."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Penn Station vs. Moynihan Train Hall

Penn Station, originally built in 1910 and rebuilt in the 1960s, is a bustling, functional, and often crowded transit hub. It serves Amtrak, LIRR, NJ Transit, and multiple subway lines, making it a critical artery for New York City. While it gets the job done, reviews often mention its lack of aesthetic appeal and limited seating. Reddit

Across the street, the Moynihan Train Hall offers a stark contrast. Housed in the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building, it provides a grand, light-filled space with soaring ceilings and modern amenities. It primarily serves Amtrak and LIRR, offering a more comfortable and visually appealing waiting experience. Many travelers recommend heading to Moynihan if you have the option, especially for longer waits. InstagramReddit

Navigating between the two is straightforward, but understanding their distinct atmospheres can help manage expectations and enhance your travel experience. TikTok

Dining Options Around Penn Station

Penn Station itself boasts a variety of food options, catering to quick meals and snacks. Popular choices include Los Tacos No. 1, often cited as some of the best tacos in the city, Shake Shack for burgers, and Chick-fil-A. You'll also find numerous delis, coffee shops like Dunkin', and sweet treat spots like Insomnia Cookies. TikTokInstagramReddit

Beyond the station's immediate offerings, the surrounding Midtown Manhattan area is a culinary hotspot. Within a short walk, you can find everything from fine dining to casual eateries. For those looking for specific recommendations, exploring the blocks surrounding Penn Station will reveal a diverse array of cuisines to satisfy any craving. Instagram

When planning your meal, consider the time of day. During peak hours, lines can be long, so factor that into your schedule if you're on a tight timeline. TikTok

Navigating Commuter Rail Lines

Penn Station is a critical nexus for three major commuter rail lines: Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), NJ Transit, and Metro-North Railroad (though Metro-North primarily uses Grand Central Terminal, some services may connect or be relevant for transfers). Each line serves a distinct region, connecting suburban areas to Manhattan. TikTok+2

LIRR connects commuters from Long Island to Penn Station, a vital link for many residents. NJ Transit provides service from various points in New Jersey, making Penn Station a key gateway for cross-state travel. Understanding which line serves your origin and destination is crucial for smooth travel. TikTok+1

While the station is designed for high volume, navigating between these different services can be confusing for newcomers. Pay close attention to signage, as platforms and waiting areas are clearly marked for each specific rail line. Reddit
