Reviews Summary

Mamoun's Falafel is widely celebrated as a historic NYC institution, praised for its consistently delicious and affordable falafel, shawarma, and dips. Many appreciate the authentic flavors and the nostalgic atmosphere, especially at the original Greenwich Village location. However, some recent reviews note changes in menu offerings and occasional stock issues, leading to a slight dip in the once-unwavering experience.

"Mamouns is a staple and a must-go whenever I'm in the city. Super friendly, super delicious, super quick. Shawarma is :chef's kiss: and the falafel is so so good. If you like babaganoush, I really have to say it's some of the best I've ever had ❤️ (cards/Google/Apple pay accepted, but a discount for cash) Cannot wait to stop into macdougal st again :)"

Rita Jean Gardner

"Said to be the best Falafel in New York and it certainly did not disappoint. I am not too much of a fan of falafel, but this is pretty good. The sauce is a little bit too sour to my taste."

Liang Huang

"Been coming to this location for many years. Absolutely delicious food and the atmosphere brings back great memories. But lately I have noticed things are definitely changing. They got rid of their original homemade lentil soup. They now serve some ready made soup instead. Definitely not the same experience.
Last time I was there, they were all out of shawarma and lamb kebab. They only had falafel, kofta and chicken kebab, at 9pm!
I’ve been to this place hundreds if not thousands of times, never have I seen them be out of any kind of dish.
It’s not the end of the world but when you take a long trip for over an hour to grab some good old shawarma sandwiches just to find out that they’re all out, it’s disappointing.
I have been to some of their other locations but nothing beats an original location. I hope they bring back some of the old experience and continue to keep this place great as it always has been."

A Taste of NYC History

Mamoun's Falafel is more than just a place to eat; it's a culinary landmark. Established in 1971 on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, it holds the distinction of being one of the first Middle Eastern restaurants in the United States. TikTok+1 This pioneering spirit is reflected in its enduring popularity and its role as a beloved fixture for generations of New Yorkers, from NYU students to late-night revelers. TikTok

The original location, in particular, evokes a sense of nostalgia and authenticity. While the chain has expanded to multiple locations, many patrons still seek out the original for its historical significance and classic ambiance. TikTok The simple, no-frills environment allows the focus to remain squarely on the food, which has consistently delivered bold, traditional flavors for over five decades. TikTok+1

This deep connection to New York City's food history makes Mamoun's a must-visit for anyone interested in experiencing the city's evolving culinary landscape. It’s a place where you can taste tradition and feel the pulse of the city. TikTok

The Art of the Falafel

At Mamoun's Falafel, the star of the show is undoubtedly the falafel itself. These small, deep-fried balls are made from ground chickpeas or fava beans, herbs, and spices, resulting in a crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior. TikTok TikTok creators often highlight the freshness, noting that the falafel is fried to order, ensuring optimal texture and taste. TikTok

The preparation is key to Mamoun's success. The blend of spices creates a distinct flavor profile that keeps customers coming back. When served in a warm pita with fresh vegetables and a generous dollop of tahini or their famous garlic toum sauce, it becomes a complete and satisfying meal. TikTok+1 The balance of textures – the crunch of the falafel, the softness of the pita, and the crispness of the toppings – is what makes it so appealing. TikTok

Beyond the classic falafel sandwich, Mamoun's also offers falafel bowls and sides, allowing diners to enjoy this staple in different ways. Whether you're a falafel aficionado or trying it for the first time, Mamoun's falafel is consistently praised for its quality and authentic taste. TikTok+1

Beyond Falafel: Exploring the Menu

While falafel is the main draw, Mamoun's Falafel offers a robust menu of other Middle Eastern delights. The shawarma, whether lamb or chicken, is a popular alternative, known for its tender, marinated meat served in a pita or as a platter. TikTok Many visitors also rave about the hummus and babaganoush, describing them as creamy, rich, and some of the best they've ever tasted. Reddit

Don't overlook the sides and sauces. The garlic toum sauce has gained a cult following, with many diners specifically seeking it out to pair with their fries or sandwiches. TikTok The Cajun fries themselves are also a surprisingly popular item, especially when dipped in that potent garlic sauce. TikTok For a refreshing drink, the mango lemonade is frequently recommended as a perfect complement to the savory dishes. TikTok

It's worth noting that menu availability can sometimes be an issue, with some popular items like shawarma or lentil soup occasionally selling out, particularly later in the evening. Reddit However, the core offerings of falafel, kebabs, and dips remain consistently delicious and affordable. TikTok
