Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Earth Room as a unique, free, and profoundly meditative art installation. Many are captivated by the sheer novelty of a loft filled with earth in the heart of NYC, finding it a peaceful and thought-provoking experience. However, some encounters with caretakers have been described as stern, and the limited hours can be a point of frustration.

"Visiting here was a dream come true ever since i learned about it in my art history class. It really is just a room full of dirt but its also so much more than that. From having to buzz in and walking up the creaky narrow steps to stepping into the quiet room…its breathtaking. I’ve visited it a few times in various weather conditions and times of day/year and it is a unique experience each time with the way the light cascades around the room. It is so so quiet and could actually sit there for hours. The last time i was there i ran into some people who lived in the building and gushed about how lucky they were lol. I dont think they were as enthused as me but they were polite haha. Anyway its a real quick two minute pop in for the next time ur traversing around SoHo and want a moment of peace or to excitedly say “guess what i saw in new york?! …a room full of dirt!!!” And confused the people your talking to"

"Miracle. This place’s existence is a real miracle. You literally come there for free and see a spacious room filled dirt. Nice experience. For people who don’t understand how to get inside all information is provided outside:)"

"The New York Earth Room is truly a hidden gem — one of those places I love to share with friends. I first discovered it when a friend showed it to me, and now I’ve passed it on to others, who are all just as fascinated.

It’s so beautiful and almost unbelievable that in the middle of New York City, on a second floor, you can find a room full of earth. And it’s been here for so long — maybe even longer than some visitors have been alive.

The quiet, meditative atmosphere invites reflection — it makes you pause and think about our existence and what truly matters.

Thank you, dear Beuys, for this incredible art installation. I deeply appreciat"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Walter De Maria

The Earth Room is a seminal work by the influential Land Artist Walter De Maria. Installed in 1977, this permanent installation transforms a loft space in Soho into a landscape of pure earth. De Maria was known for his large-scale, often minimalist, works that engaged with natural elements and the viewer's perception of space and time. The Earth Room is a prime example of his conceptual approach, challenging traditional notions of art by bringing the raw materiality of the earth into an urban gallery setting. Instagram+1

This installation is not just about the visual; it's an immersive sensory experience. The sheer volume of earth, approximately 197 cubic meters, creates a powerful presence. Visitors are invited to contemplate their relationship with nature, art, and their own existence. The longevity of the piece, preserved by the Dia Art Foundation, speaks to its enduring significance and the artist's vision of art as a lasting, contemplative force. InstagramReddit

De Maria's work often plays with scale and context, making the viewer question their surroundings. The Earth Room in New York is particularly striking because it's a piece of the natural world contained within the man-made environment of a city loft. This juxtaposition is key to its impact, offering a moment of grounding and reflection amidst the urban chaos. Instagram

Preservation and Caretakers

The Earth Room is a testament to dedicated preservation. The Dia Art Foundation has been instrumental in maintaining Walter De Maria's installation since its inception. This involves careful monitoring of the earth's condition, humidity, and overall environment to ensure the artwork remains as intended by the artist. Instagram

Visitors often note the presence of caretakers who are dedicated to the upkeep of the space. While their role is crucial for preservation, some reviews suggest interactions can be stern if visitors are not respectful. It's important to remember that this is a living artwork, and the caretakers are its guardians. Their commitment ensures that this unique piece of Land Art continues to be accessible to the public. Reddit

The longevity of the Earth Room is remarkable, especially in a city like New York where spaces are constantly changing. The ongoing care and attention it receives highlight its status as a significant cultural and artistic landmark. This dedication allows the installation to continue offering a profound and unique experience to all who visit. Reddit
