Cruger-dePeyster Sugar Mill Ruins: while I was in New Smyrna Beach recently, I saw the word ‘ruins’ on a map. Instantly I thought “what?!?” and had to go. These are the ruins of a sugar mill built in 1830. The Seminole Indians (native to this area) raided the property and set it on fire, with assistance from the slaves who worked here. That was in 1835 and parts of it remain. Almost like history...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Sugar Mill Ruins to be a small, interesting historical site with a pleasant nature trail and picnic areas. While the history is well-preserved and the site is generally well-kept, some note that the entrance signage could be more prominent and that trash cans can sometimes be full.

"Small, very interesting site with picnic tables and locked bathroom. There is a short very nicely shaded nature trail leading through the woods behind the ruins"

Wendy Wilson

"I really like this historic oddity. The history is explained and preserved well. The main entrance needs more conspicuous signage. The transition from the road to the lot needs grading but everything else is good. The garbage cans were full and litter has a potential to creep in."

Tom B

"Neat area with a bit of history and plenty of spots to picnic or relax."
