What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise St. Louis Cathedral for its stunning beauty, historical significance, and serene atmosphere, calling it a must-visit landmark in New Orleans. While some note the need for maintenance and a push for donations, the breathtaking stained glass, magnificent organ music, and welcoming staff create a deeply spiritual and memorable experience for many.
"Short Story: historically amazing and cool to go inside and experience. A must do simply for that reason. If you are catholic then it is a zero excuse trip inside.
Skip if you are not into to historical places you will find it to just be an old church.
For the rest of us, the place is run down and in need or repairs so there is a heavy written push for donations but not mandatory and no one is asking you directly. The stained glass windows are amazing to view. Most places importantly ( at least for me) you simply need to sit and release that which you need to."

"I attended 9am mass on Sunday. The sermon was short. I hope it was only due to the saints game and not a normal practice. I had a higher expectation for the Cathedral. The front doors were not accessible. This is a beautiful church with much needed maintenance. The singing was beautiful, magnificent and touched my spirit. I wish I could have heard more of her tones than the magnificent organs, which were clear, but a decibel too high. All people should attend a mass here."

"St. Louis Cathedral, located in the heart of the French Quarter overlooking Jackson Square, is a truly beautiful and historically significant landmark. As the oldest continuously active Catholic cathedral in the United States, it holds a special place in the history of New Orleans.
Beyond its stunning architecture and rich history, I found the staff inside to be exceptionally welcoming. I even noticed a staff member walking around and proactively offering to answer any questions visitors might have, which was a really nice touch and made the experience even more engaging.
The cathedral, with its three iconic steeples, has been a fixture of the New Orleans skyline since its dedication in 1794. It stands on the site of the first church in the area, established in 1718. The current building is actually the third church on this location, with the previous ones being destroyed by a hurricane and a fire.
Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply seeking a moment of peace, St. Louis Cathedral is a must-visit. The welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable staff truly enhance the experience of exploring this beautiful and historic cathedral."
