Reviews Summary
Sally's Apizza is a legendary New Haven institution, celebrated for its authentic coal-fired apizza, particularly the classic Mozzarella & Tomato Sauce pie. While many rave about the incredible flavor and unique crust, the notoriously long wait times are a significant drawback for some visitors. The atmosphere is classic and the service generally friendly, making it a worthwhile experience for pizza aficionados, though quality can occasionally be inconsistent.
"Like many a tourist, I had Sally's Apizza on my list because of Dave Portnoy. I was blown away when I turned the corner to a line at the end of the block. The anticipation could not be higher!
We ordered two large Mozzarella & Tomato Sauce Pies, a small Bacon, Apple, Sage pie, a Caesar Salad, and a Gassosa to drink. The mozzarella and tomato pie is king for a reason. A sweet and fresh tomato sauce on a light, coal-fired crust does all the heavy lifting. The bacon and apple was unique, but I don't love white cheese pizzas and the apple is too nuanced for me. The Caesar salad was incredible, and I pinched myself to ensure it wasn't my taste buds boosting flavors because of the wait. The dressing isn't too strong, and coats each leaf of fresh lettuce perfectly while dashed with just the right amount of croutons. And the gassosa complemented the pizza as I hoped it would, so I'm a big fan of the "Italian Sprite." The amount of food was perfect for a party of five.
Angel was a great server. He under-promised and over-delivered. When we were seated, he let us know pies would take an hour. He brought our salad and drinks out quickly, and we were pleasantly surprised when food was out in about 30-40 minutes. He was quick on refills, and checked on us regularly. I enjoyed how even though there's a lot of anticipation from patrons to get into the restaurant, and then once in receive food quickly, the staff keep the anxiety down and manage the time. They set the tone, and it makes for a great dining experience. Great service all around.
The atmosphere is everything I could hope for. A seasoned pizzeria part of the soul of a city, with fans old and new who wait for hours to get a table and share a pie. In total, I waited in line for 90 minutes, then 40 to get the pizza. It was absolutely worth the wait. Would I do it again? I'd honestly probably plan ahead and do takeout, but for my first time, I'd wait again. It was a legendary experience and well worth the memories. One Bite: 8.7/10"

"I had to try coal fired pizza while visiting the New Haven area for a travel baseball tournament. (The small joys of being a traveling sports parent. Go Bombers! ⚾💣🥰)
I ordered door dash from Sally's. I researched just about every pizza joint on door dash and Sally's was the only coal fired (and I had to do a separate AI search to find the deets on each).
It wasn't until the box arrived and another baseball mom recognized the name from a big time pizza reviewer, that I realized what a treat we were all in for. (I think she squealed)
The pizza wasn't very warm. Not the restaurant's fault. I'd say, if this is very important to you, go there yourself.
The crust had a lovely crunch and char. The toppings, including the fresh tasting tomato sauce, we're great!
I think next time we'll treat ourselves to checking out the atmosphere and service on the restaurant.
Enjoy!"

"1st Timers to Sally's Apizza. This was a pretty interesting experience. There was a pretty long wait - 45 minutes. The inside is small, but it offers a unique bit of history. The staff & service was excellent.
We (party of 4) split a couple pizza. They were very good! I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you passing through the New Haven area."
