What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is widely celebrated for its authentic, coal-fired New Haven-style apizza, particularly the legendary White Clam Pie. Visitors praise the crispy, charred crust and quality ingredients, though some find the pizza can be a bit too well-done or the atmosphere a bit loud. The friendly service and ample parking at many locations add to the positive dining experience.
"It was a little loud but definitely had the feeling of little Italy. It didn't disjointed at all. The tomatoes from Italy were a magical touch to the pizza we had and the crispy crust was exactly what I'd been missing all my life. The open kitchen with the brick pizza oven sealed the deal for me. Thank you for a wonderful lunch from your wayward Florida friend."

"This was my first stop on my little pizza tour I did this past weekend. I went to the main restaurant to get a table and the nice hostess instructed me to go to the location a little past the parking lot. I didn't have a long wait time to be seated which was great. Jeanne was my server and she was friendly and attentive.
Now the pizza... Being from New York and a follower of Dave Portnoy I have high expectations. I had a bit of a wait time to get my small meatball and ricotta pie and when it came out it was piping hot. Word to the wise to first time patrons....let the pizza cool down a bit before digging in otherwise you will burn the roof of you mouth like I did. I like my pizza cooked, but the crust was a bit too well done for my taste. Some spots were hard and very crunchy. Otherwise the rest of the pie was rather good and I would rate them an 8.5 out of 10.
They have a good menu with decent prices, plus they serve alcohol. The establishment is clean and they have a good size parking lot which is a plus for those that struggle to find street parking.
In closing, I am glad I tried this place for my first New Haven pizza experience and I would come here again in the future."

"I really enjoyed their pizza. The crust was thin exactly what I like with that satisfying crispness. The toppings were well‑balanced, and the overall flavor stood out. Highly recommend to try their sangria and tiramisu. Definitely a place I’d go back !"

The Art of New Haven-Style Apizza
The intense heat of the coal ovens, reaching temperatures upwards of 700-800°F (370-425°C), cooks the pizza rapidly, creating that signature crispness and characteristic charring on the edges and bottom of the crust. This charring is not seen as a flaw but rather a desirable element that adds a unique smoky depth to the flavor. Many visitors are initially surprised by the 'burned' appearance, but it's an integral part of the apizza experience.
Frank Pepe himself, an Italian immigrant, began making pizzas in a Wooster Street bakery in 1925, laying the foundation for what would become a legendary pizzeria. His commitment to quality ingredients and the traditional coal-fired method has been passed down through generations, ensuring that the authentic New Haven apizza experience continues to be celebrated.
The Iconic White Clam Pie
This unique pie was reportedly created by Frank Pepe himself in the 1930s, initially as a way to use up leftover ingredients. What started as an experimental dish quickly became a local sensation and a must-try for anyone visiting New Haven. The combination of textures – the crisp crust, the tender clams, and the melted cheese – creates a surprisingly harmonious and addictive flavor profile.
While it might sound unusual to some, the White Clam Pie is consistently praised by critics and customers alike. It's a testament to the innovative spirit of New Haven's pizza scene and a dish that truly sets Frank Pepe's apart. Many visitors consider it the ultimate test of their pizza adventurousness and are often delighted by its unique taste.
Frank Pepe's Expansion and Legacy
The legacy of Frank Pepe is deeply rooted in family ownership and a commitment to tradition. The original Wooster Street location remains a pilgrimage site for pizza enthusiasts, while newer branches aim to replicate the authentic experience. This careful expansion allows more people to taste the 'original' New Haven pizza without having to travel to Connecticut.
Despite its growth, Frank Pepe's continues to be celebrated for its dedication to the craft of coal-fired pizza-making. The brand's success highlights the power of a strong culinary heritage and the universal love for a well-made, flavorful pizza. They are even celebrating their 100th anniversary soon, marking a century of delicious apizza.
