What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway for its friendly and accommodating staff, and the unique experience of riding a historic steam train. Special events like the Christmas Train are highlighted as magical. However, some reviewers note that the scenery along the route can be less picturesque than expected, with parts passing through industrial or less-than-ideal areas.
"Such a lovely and historical place to visit. Take a ride on the fall foliage trains in the open air cars for the best views. You won't want to miss this place. Very affordable and accommodating to everyone's needs. The crews are well seasoned and await to greet and help absolutely everyone"
Virgil Fitzpatrick
"If you've never been on a train and want to say you have been, this is an inexpensive way of doing that. However, this is not what my friend and I had expected. The trip was not very "scenic" unless you enjoy seeing rundown backyards and trash piles. I understand the railway cannot control the public, but I wouldn't say this is scenic. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. The windows do not lock in place and can be dangerous. Several windows in the car we were in slammed shut from the vibrations of the train, thank goodness no one was hurt. The small town, can't remember the name, wasn't much to look at either and the "gift shop" there was a joke. But it was an inexpensive way to kill a couple of hours, just wouldn't do it again."
Sharina Struckman
"The train ride was nice and relaxing and the staff was friendly. However, there is nothing scenic about this ride. You really couldn't see fall foliage. The train route takes you by a gravel pit, a lumber yard with a stack of cut trees and pallets, and through a run-down neighborhood full of junk, old cars, and caged dogs. The PA system was so bad you couldn't understand the short narratives. The historic village at the end of the ride was interesting, but you didn't have enough time to explore. The photos I posted were taken from the train, with the exception of the log cabin with the air conditioner in the window, and that was taken at the historic village."
