"Okay. So let's talk about this...
$14 parking for the weekend. Not bad. We were close to the entrance and that's even better. Sand is soft soft with lots of small rocks on the wall down. Wear shoes.
You instantly notice the strong ocean smell, almost like it's low tide but it's not.
The ocean was RED from all the red seaweed. I understand we had a hurricane pass through recently, maybe that's why this happened .
My son was brave to still swim.... When we took his bathing suit off... HUGE bugs came out of his bathing suit.. terrible 😭😭
The waves were perfect, some tidal pools present.
Bathrooms and food available."

Understanding the Tides at Scarborough
Conversely, low tide is when Scarborough truly reveals its expansive beauty. The ocean recedes, exposing a vast expanse of soft sand, often described as the best in Rhode Island. This is also when fascinating tidal pools emerge, teeming with small marine life and interesting rock formations. Many visitors find this the ideal time for long walks along the shore, exploring the newly revealed areas, and enjoying the feeling of open space.
It's crucial for visitors to check the tide schedule before their visit. Planning your beach day around low tide can maximize your enjoyment of the beach's size and unique features. Remember that the shoreline can also be a bit rocky and sometimes covered in seaweed, making water shoes a practical choice, especially during lower tides when more of the shore is exposed.
Beach Activities and Rules
Beyond swimming, the beach is perfect for long walks, especially during low tide when the shoreline extends significantly. The observation tower provides a unique vantage point for appreciating the coastal scenery. For those who enjoy a picnic, there are designated areas and tables available. While the beach is generally welcoming, there are a few rules to be aware of. Drones are prohibited from flying over the beach, and charcoal grills are not allowed; only gas grills are permitted for barbecues.
Visitors should also note that activities like throwing balls or frisbees might be restricted in certain areas or at certain times to ensure the safety and comfort of all beachgoers. Always be mindful of posted signs and lifeguard instructions to ensure a pleasant and safe experience for everyone.
Navigating Parking and Fees
Given the popularity of the beach, especially during summer months, the parking lots can fill up quickly. Visitors are strongly advised to arrive early, particularly if planning a weekend visit. Arriving before 9 or 10 AM often guarantees a parking spot. For those seeking a less crowded experience and potentially easier parking, visiting on a weekday is highly recommended.
While the parking fee is a consideration, many visitors find it reasonable for the amenities and the quality of the beach experience. The revenue generated from parking fees helps maintain the state park's facilities and services, ensuring a well-kept environment for everyone to enjoy.
