"My first time at this beautiful place. I will be back. Lovely two mile boardwalk with gorgeous views and very friendly people that work there! Have a nice gift shop, clean bathrooms and I got water and snacks as well for the walk. Very accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Highly recommended checking out this wonderful preserve! Take your time and listen to Nature!"

"This place is gorgeous. The boardwalk is in great shape. There is a lot of shade so we were comfortable despite the Florida sun and heat. If you really want to take your time, you could easily spend about 3 hours at this place. We didn't see as much wildlife as we had hoped for but then we were on a tight time schedule. Even so just the relaxing nature of the place and the beauty made it worthwhile. If I had anything negative to say, I feel the $17 per person is a bit much for a place like this."

"This place is an absolute must see for anyone who likes the outdoors, especially if you are a birder. The swamp is amazing and it is so cool to get to see an old growth forest like this. The trail is very well kept. There are lots of activities that they offer. When we went it wasn't too crowded. Go early if you're visiting outside of the winter months to avoid the heat."

The Majestic Bald Cypress Forest
The bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a unique conifer that thrives in wet environments. Its distinctive 'knees' (pneumatophores) help it breathe in the swampy soil. The forest provides crucial habitat for numerous species, making its preservation a significant conservation achievement. The sheer scale and age of these trees are humbling and a testament to the importance of protecting natural wonders.
A Haven for Wildlife
Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 300 species recorded here, including wading birds, raptors, and migratory species. Keep an eye out for the striking roseate spoonbill, various herons, and the elusive barred owl. The sanctuary's varied habitats, from cypress swamp to pine flatwoods, support this rich biodiversity.
Beyond the more commonly seen animals, the sanctuary is also home to snakes, turtles, and various insects. The low water levels during certain times can concentrate wildlife, offering even more spectacular viewing opportunities.
