The first official event at the Carnivore Chicagoland Naperville Meetup was a hike at McDowell Grove Forest Preserve in Naperville, Illinois. While waiting for everyone to arrive we got to chat with new and old friends. We first followed a creek as we walked along. The trail was mostly shaded and we were happy on the hot Saturday morning. We looped around the park and enjoyed everyone's company.

Pack Mosquito Repellent

Essential for unpaved trails, especially when visiting with kids. :syringe: Reddit

Let’s go biking #mcdowellgroveforestpreserve .. around 6.5 miles multiple trail loops ..it’s was a lovely day with 60 degree Fahrenheit.. the trails are gravel and limestone material, not very ideal for a road bike, mountain bike would be great and hybrids tires would be right. The info booth at parking says this is the home of Coyotes and we did see a Raccoon carcass. Heard a red headed woodpecke...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise McDowell Grove for its beautiful, extensive trails suitable for hiking and biking, abundant picnic spots, and tranquil atmosphere. The preserve is noted as dog-friendly and a great place for nature observation, though some caution about ticks on unpaved paths.

"While searching for a new hiking spot for our family including our dog, we found McDowell Grove Forest Preserve— a wonderful place to visit for those who love hiking, biking, fishing, picnicking, or being in a peaceful, foliage-rich forest preserve.

Beautiful trails, some paved and others unpaved, be sure to carry a mosquito spray/repellent for the unpaved trails especially if accompanying kids.

Our dog who loves to hike with us didn't want to go back just like us. The place is super tranquil, you can hear birds chirping around, and if you are super lucky, you can encounter families of deer as well.

Restrooms at the location, right when you enter, plus a great spot for fishing. Plenty of parking. Picnic benches installed at various locations (covered/uncovered). #dogfriendly #familyfriendly"

"My first visit impressions: big, many trails, quite a few e-bikes, many picnic tables. Sign posts inform the distance of the trails. Saw a Heron and an Egret in the river by the dam, so beautiful. Looking forward to exploring more."

Chris Evergreen

"Beautiful park with miles and miles of trails. Most of the trails are crushed limestone but they also have some single track and wider dirt trails. There’s also a small lake to run around and a dam at the other end of the park. The parking lot is a great size and was recently repaved. Check this place out!"
