What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hanging Dog Recreation Area is appreciated for its beautiful lake access and peaceful picnic spots, despite the campground's closure and overgrown state. Visitors enjoy the scenic views and opportunities for boating and fishing, though some note the primitive conditions in certain areas.
"Well this is a gem
But it's a little confusing because obviously it is closed down and abandoned and when I said close down there is no campground it's all overgrown and it's really sad because at one time this place probably was very beautiful. But they have it all locked up
There is still trails that are accessible and they have a beautiful boat landing at the end of the road
Even though it's abandoned you can find a lot of cool trails and things to do here"

"Covered picnic area with grouped tables and three table sets set apart, all with own grills. Winter time can see how low the lake really is with the floating dock laying on the boat ramp. Peaceful, beautiful lookout. Year-round access.
U.S. National Forest Service permanently closed the campground in 2018 due to reduced demand. According to NFS, "Within 50 miles of Hanging Dog, there are at least nine other Forest Service and six private campgrounds that offer similar or better facilities, including Jackrabbit Mountain Campground on Lake Chatuge near Murphy, NC.""

"A beautiful local spot to swim, rent a boat and enjoy nature! Be sure to drive all the way to the end of the road, Google maps only took us to the entrance."

Understanding the 'Closed' Campground
Travelers have noted that the former campground areas are now overgrown and appear abandoned, which can be a bit melancholic. However, the core recreational aspects of the area, particularly the access to the lake, are still very much available and appreciated by visitors. It's important for visitors to manage their expectations and understand that while the land is accessible, it's strictly for day-use activities.
Navigating to and Enjoying the Lake
During the summer months, the lake is ideal for boating, swimming, and fishing. Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful picnic areas equipped with grills, making it a perfect spot for a family outing or a relaxing day outdoors. Be aware that water levels can be significantly lower in the winter, which might affect some water activities and the appearance of the floating dock.
While some trails are described as overgrown, they still offer opportunities for exploration and enjoying the natural scenery. The overall atmosphere is one of quiet natural beauty, with fewer crowds than more developed recreational sites.
