What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers generally find Mount Democrat to be a challenging but rewarding 14er, with stunning summit views. The scree field is noted as a tough section, and early morning starts are crucial for parking and weather. Some find the descent from Bross particularly difficult.
"What a great hike! Not nearly as difficult as I was expecting. It was tough going up and down the scree for me but other than that it was pretty straight forward. I recommend getting there around 6am to get a decent parking spot. Many people camp the night before so they can start early. Also having a car with clearance is good because getting to the parking lot can be difficult."

"Intense climb through a boulder and scree field. Don't think you're at the top yet though, as there is at least one false summit after passing the saddle! However, the view from the top is worth the climb... You can easily find Elbert, Massive, Quandary, Sherman, and beyond!"
Brian Baker
"An excellent hike all around! The trail to democrat from kite lake is only about a couple miles, so it makes for a fun class 2 14er. The road towards the trailhead is relatively smooth until the last tenth of a mile, but you can traverse it with whatever clearance a 928 has without worrying about damaging your undercarriage. As long as you drive “creatively” that is."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
It's crucial to manage expectations and prioritize safety. Ensure children are well-acclimated to altitude, well-hydrated, and properly equipped with sturdy shoes and layers. Consider hiking only to the saddle or a lower point if the full summit push seems too ambitious. The views from lower elevations are still spectacular, and the experience can be positive without reaching the absolute peak.
💰 Budget Travelers
Packing your own food and water is essential and significantly cheaper than purchasing it. The hike itself is free, offering incredible value for the experience. Compared to paid attractions, a 14er hike provides a world-class adventure for a minimal outlay.
💑 Couples Seeking Adventure
Consider making it a weekend trip, perhaps camping near Kite Lake the night before to enjoy a romantic sunrise hike. The option to traverse to Mount Lincoln and Bross adds an extra layer of adventure for couples who enjoy pushing their limits together.

The Fourteener Challenge: Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross
This multi-peak hike requires a good level of fitness, acclimatization to altitude, and a full day dedicated to the endeavor. It's crucial to start very early to allow ample time for the entire traverse and to descend before any potential afternoon storms roll in. The varied terrain, from scree fields to exposed ridges, demands careful footing and mental fortitude.
Many hikers recommend tackling this route in a specific order, often starting with Democrat and progressing through Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. However, the exact sequence can depend on personal preference and conditions. Regardless of the order, this traverse is a quintessential Colorado mountaineering experience, offering unparalleled alpine scenery and a significant sense of accomplishment.
Altitude Acclimatization and Safety
Symptoms of altitude sickness can include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. If you experience these, the best course of action is to descend immediately. Pushing through can lead to more severe conditions like HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema). Listen to your body and be conservative with your pace.
Beyond altitude, weather is a critical safety factor. Mountain weather can change rapidly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Colorado Rockies during summer, bringing lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds. Starting your hike before dawn and aiming to be off the summit by noon or 1 PM is a standard safety practice. Always check the forecast before you go and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate.
Navigating the Terrain: Scree, Boulders, and Trail Etiquette
When traversing scree, it's often easier to walk on the larger, more stable rocks rather than the loose, smaller stones. Take your time, and if you're hiking with others, be mindful of dislodging rocks that could fall on those below you. The concept of 'Leave No Trace' is paramount; stay on the established trail as much as possible to minimize your impact on the fragile alpine environment.
Trail etiquette is also important. Hikers ascending generally have the right of way over those descending. Be courteous to other hikers, and if you encounter someone struggling, offer assistance if you can. Sharing the trail respectfully ensures a positive experience for everyone.
