Mount Dana, Yosemite NP So many animals, so many steps, so much wind. I had to take my shirt off and wear it as a headband because I have sensitive ear holes and thought I was getting an ear infection it hurt so bad. Glad I had my pattagucci R1 or I would have froze solid. (Third hand gift from jimmy🥰) I started hiking with gaiters so my ankles don’t get super dirty. It helps and I get “ni...

Reviews Summary

Hikers consistently praise Mount Dana for its breathtaking summit panoramas and the rewarding challenge of reaching its 13,061-foot peak. While the hike is strenuous and requires careful attention to altitude and weather, the stunning views of Mono Lake and the surrounding Sierras make it a worthwhile endeavor for experienced mountaineers. Some note that while beautiful, the immediate landscape might be less varied than other Yosemite trails. InstagramReddit

"Hiked Mt. Dana on 14th June. There were lot of hardened snow patches en route. Tree cover for the first mile, but pretty open rest of the way. The elevation and the altitude might cause altitude sickness for some. Amazing view of Mono Lake and other peaks from the top. It's a hard hike, but well worth it!"

Vasudevan Namboothiry

"Beautiful panorama to Mono-lake and the surrounding mountains. We went on this mountain rather for the view and the height-challenge than for the landscape. Even though that is nice, there are more lovelier landscapes at other hiking routes in the Yosemite park.
Quite normal and mostly well-visible hiking-trail to summit with gravel and loose stones, which allows speedy hiking. However the trail is rather steep. Rarely rough stones hide the path, but stone piles help then as signalisation. We needed nearly two hours up from Tioga pass and 80 minutes back by speedy hiking."

Patrick Schneidinger

"Isn't she lovely. Not for the intermediate hiker. Last 1/2 mile 1200 foot gain. Still some snow, but can easily go around. Watch out for aggressive Marmots. I'll be back soon."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Challenge of High Altitude

Mount Dana's summit stands at 13,061 feet, making altitude sickness a significant concern for many hikers. Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. To mitigate these risks, it's crucial to acclimatize properly. This means spending at least one night, preferably two, at a moderate elevation before attempting the hike. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and strenuous activity on your first day in the park are also vital steps. InstagramReddit

Even with acclimatization, listen to your body. If you start experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness, the best course of action is to descend immediately. The trail offers a gradual ascent for the first mile, but the latter half becomes significantly steeper, increasing the physical demand and the potential for altitude-related issues. Reddit

Key takeaway: Prioritize your health and safety by respecting the altitude. A well-prepared hiker is a happy hiker on Mount Dana. Instagram

Navigating the Trail and Terrain

The trail to Mount Dana's summit is generally well-defined, marked by cairns (piles of stones), which is helpful given the exposed nature of the upper mountain. However, the terrain itself presents a challenge. The initial section offers some tree cover, providing a brief respite, but the majority of the hike is above the treeline. Expect a mix of gravel, loose scree, and larger rocks, especially in the final push to the summit. InstagramReddit

The last half-mile is particularly demanding, with a steep gain of around 1,200 feet. This section requires significant effort and can feel like climbing unstable boulders and waist-high stone steps. Hikers often describe gasping for air every few steps during this final ascent. Reddit

Pro Tip: Wearing sturdy, thick-soled hiking boots is highly recommended for ankle support and grip on the uneven surfaces. Hiking poles can also be invaluable for stability and reducing strain on your knees, especially during the descent. Reddit

Weather and Safety Considerations

The Sierra Nevada mountain range is known for its unpredictable weather, and Mount Dana is no exception. Afternoon thunderstorms are a common occurrence during the summer months, and they can develop rapidly. It is strongly advised to start your hike as early as possible to ensure you are below the treeline by noon, when the risk of lightning increases significantly. Reddit

Beyond thunderstorms, expect strong winds, especially as you gain elevation and approach the summit. Temperatures can also drop quickly, even on a sunny day, so packing layers, including a windproof jacket and warm hat, is essential. Early season hikers might encounter snow patches, which can be navigated around but require caution. Instagram

Safety First: Always check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate. Inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time. TikTok
