What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Mount Roberts for its breathtaking views, accessible tram ride, and rewarding hiking trails. The combination of stunning scenery and the opportunity for both leisurely enjoyment and active exploration makes it a highlight for many Juneau visitors. Some minor drawbacks include potential crowds during peak times and the presence of insects on hiking trails.
"Loved this hike! We hiked at the March after a little snow storm. It was perfect! The hike was family friendly with great views! No bathrooms at the trail head. It was cool to see views of Gunstock Mountain too!"
Mike & G
"Mt Roberts really is a gem of a trail. The 5 miles and 1300’ elevation gain are worth every step for the spectacular view of the Lakes Region. The best views are about a 1/2 mile before reaching the summit on the southern-facing, nearly wide-open ridge line.
It’s pretty easygoing for conditioned hikers or is nice prep to condition for 4K footers.
The trail is very clearly marked, with orange blazers throughout. At every point on the trail, there seems to be a blazer visible.
There’s plenty of parking, even if the smaller lot by the stable is full.

"Good hike. Alot under tree canopy so pleasant on a warm day. Views spectacular on the way up. A little underwhelming when actually at the top."

At the summit, visitors can explore the Nature Center, which offers insights into the local ecosystem, wildlife, and history of the area. The center often features educational exhibits and sometimes live animal encounters. The observation decks provide unparalleled panoramic views, making it a prime spot for photography. For those seeking more adventure, the summit serves as the starting point for several hiking trails, including the well-known Mount Roberts Trail.
When planning your visit, consider that the tram can get busy, especially when multiple cruise ships are in port. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid the peak crowds. Checking the 'Juneau tram hours' and purchasing tickets in advance are also smart strategies to maximize your time and potentially secure a better 'Juneau tram discount'.
Hiking the Mount Roberts Trail
The hike is largely under a tree canopy, offering shade and a pleasant experience on warmer days. However, the real payoff comes as you ascend and break out onto the open, southern-facing ridge lines, where the most breathtaking views of the Lakes Region and beyond are revealed. Some hikers note that the summit itself can be a bit underwhelming compared to the views encountered on the approach, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the journey.
Black flies can be a nuisance during certain times of the year, particularly in late spring and early summer, so bringing insect repellent is advisable. Despite this, the trail is considered family-friendly and suitable for beginners looking for a challenging yet achievable hike. Remember to check trail conditions, especially if you're visiting in the shoulder seasons, as snow can linger.
