What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Monterey Harbor a colorful and lively destination with abundant sea life, particularly sea lions. The waterfront restaurants and shops on Fisherman's Wharf offer a classic tourist experience. While many enjoy the scenic views and the chance to see marine animals, some find the prices for food and souvenirs to be quite high, and a few mention being aware of their surroundings due to occasional 'sketchy characters'.
"Colorful place to visit for a variety of activities. We walked around the area and on the nearby trail then visited the nearby shops and eateries. Prices in this tourist area are touristy and we did find very soft souvenir sweatshirts for kids and adults.
The harbor offered views of boats, sea animals, esp sea lions and many sea birds.
Accessible restrooms in central area. van accessible parking in paid garage.
Sunscreen and hat recommended for California sunshine and a jacket for the ocean breeze."
Toni Thompson
"A good place to visit but is WAY overpriced for what it is in most restaurants as well as stores near by. Parking is not bad, but there are some sketchy characters around at times so be alert. There are a lot of tourists and many places are dog friendly."
Lucas Ford
"Great place to visit most any time of the day and regardless of the weather - sun, fog or in-between. Do dress warmly as it is typically cool and breezy.
The commercial wharf is to the east and takes just a few minutes to take in. You see a mix of commercial and recreational boats.
The Fisherman's Wharf is the main attraction with an assortment of restaurants, candy and gift shops. The area is a bit grungier than other piers ( they've not taken steps to control seagulls and I've never seen staff sweeping or picking up trash, cleaning, etc.) It is safe but be aware of your surroundings.
Oh, and dress warmly. You'll see lots of people shoulders hunched together because they are cold.
The Coast Guard Pier is to the west and is a short and fun walk along a coastal path. A quick walk up and down with excellent views up the bay."
