What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dakota Wesleyan University is praised for its caring faculty and strong scholarship opportunities, offering a personalized educational experience. However, some reviews highlight concerns about diversity and potential issues with credit transfers for students coming from other institutions. The university provides a unique, character-building environment, particularly for those involved in athletics or seeking a close-knit community.
"Overall all it was an ok school to attend and really depends on person. Small size meant more one on one with teachers who cared about students but lack diversity. Great scholarship opportunities but some limiting restrictions such as having to live on campus or funds cut in half. Food is better than what it was and building some great facilities. Would not recommend for someone who loves bigger city feel because doesn’t have too much to do."

"A very racist town and University. Took a tour and although my daughter looks like their type, her Hispanic friend did not and she was made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. There was definitely a huge difference in the treatment of my daughter and her friend during the tour we took together. Walking around the town it was the same way. Racial slurs were being made constantly and nasty looks at her friend but my daughter was treated with smiles and kindness. My daughter will not be attending as she has morals and values and is a good kind person who deserves a college that is accepting of all races."

"One of the finest institutions of higher learning in the Midwest. Its small enough to give each student much access to teachers and professors, and big enough to get an education equal to any big city school. The sports teams are fun to watch and competitive, especially football, baseball, track, volleyball and softball, and they have a world class library. Great nursing school, too. The university is set in one of the nicest most picturesque towns in the midwest, Mitchell, South Dakota. We are from California and my daughter attended and played softball here, and it was a real character builder, a great positive life experience. We thought she would be lost here, but she fit right in. The winter only made her stronger, more exuberant and gave her a greater sense of belonging and involvement about her college career. She made many friends here.
One of my childhood heroes, war hero, senator and presidential nominee, George McGovern, went to school here in the 40s and was a frequent visitor thereafter, where my daughter got to meet and speak with him in 2008. If any west coast high school scholars and/or athletes, especially from the Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley, Riverside, San Berdoo, San Diego, Orange County, Bakersfield, Central Valley, Lompoc areas wish to attend college out of state, I highly recommend Dakota Wesleyan. Their sports teams are in the NAIA and they get to travel all over and the coaches are Tip Top. The locals welcome you
like a long lost relative. If you are a minority, they welcome you with open arms. Nothing but good people here. The dorms here are pretty nice, like colleges anywhere, and the campus and surrounding neighborhoods are safe.
Parents, dont be worried about sending your kids here. You cant beat a great education in a great college in a nice small town.
GO TIGERS!!!!
P.S., My daughter, an inner city girl from California, got to help out on a cattle round-up on her teammates parent's ranch while on winter break. Where else can you get that type of experience, folks?"

Navigating Transfer Credits
This situation can be particularly frustrating for students who have already invested time and money into their education. While the university may have good intentions, the reported discrepancies suggest a systemic issue in how transfer credits are evaluated or communicated. If you are a transfer student, be prepared to advocate for yourself and ensure all academic agreements are crystal clear.
Recommendations for Transfer Students
* Get it in writing: Always obtain written confirmation of credit transferability for each course.
* Speak to department heads: Consult directly with the heads of the departments for your intended major.
* Understand the timeline: Clarify how many additional semesters or years you might need to graduate.
* Compare costs: Factor in the potential for increased tuition and fees due to unaccepted credits.
Campus Community and Diversity
However, the university's small size and location in Mitchell, South Dakota, also contribute to discussions about diversity. Some reviews indicate that the campus and town can feel less diverse, and there have been concerning reports of racial insensitivity and unwelcoming experiences for minority students. While some reviewers praise the university for welcoming people of all backgrounds, others have felt isolated or experienced segregation.
Navigating the Social Scene
* Leverage small class sizes: Actively participate in class discussions and seek out faculty mentorship.
* Join student organizations: Engaging in clubs and activities can be a great way to build connections, especially if you're not involved in sports.
* Be aware of the environment: If diversity and a large, multicultural student body are high priorities, research the campus culture thoroughly and consider visiting during different times of the year.
