What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking, panoramic views from the summit of Misery Ridge, calling them 'phenomenal' and 'well worth it.' The unique high desert landscape of Smith Rock State Park is a major draw. However, many note the trail's difficulty, with steep inclines and intense sun exposure, recommending sturdy footwear and ample water. The descent can also be challenging due to loose rocks.
"This trail is no joke — it’s a tough one! With minimal shade, you’re in full sun for most of the climb, so come prepared. The reward at the top is well worth it: a wide, stunning area perfect for kicking back and soaking in the views after the challenge. The descent, though, isn’t for the faint of heart — even experienced hikers with solid boots might find the loose rocks a bit sketchy. Take your time and watch your footing"

"Not going to lie the start of this trail is pretty difficult. It’s a straight incline all the way to the top. But once you summit you’re surrounded by stunning views. I recommend finishing the trail and finishing off at the river trail, it’ll bring you all the way back to where you started misery ridge. The views are so worth it, it just kept getting better!"

"Smith Rock State Park is gorgeous. It is quite a change of scenery if you are coming from the mountains. You end up from ridges and snow to a a dry canyon with lush vegetation contained around the river. You can see experienced climbers with their equipments. The views from the top are phenomenal. You see tons of agricultural land and scale of the canyon and river. The first part of the trail is exhausting as there is quite some elevation. Get a shoe with good grip because the return may be steep in sandy conditions. You can also spot raptors in the sky."
