What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the park's historical significance and the authenticity of the annual Civil War reenactment, offering a vivid glimpse into the past. The partially preserved battlefield and Belle Grove Plantation are highlighted as key attractions. However, some attendees have noted significant issues with facility management during peak events, particularly concerning insufficient restrooms and parking, which can detract from the overall experience.
"Posted a couple of weeks after the event.
This review is from a reenactor specifically relative to the recent reenactment that occurred on the battlefield. This is an annual event that I have traveled several hundred miles to enjoy for quite a few years.
You would think as an event organizer you would strive to continue to get better and learn lessons year after year and based on feedback so that the event could continue to be a success. Not so much for this place nor these folks.
The last couple of years the lack of a sufficient number of Porta potties on site has created unsafe and unsanitary conditions. I think the units were serviced once a day, but there was just far too few of them for the number of people that were attending the event. There was a constant line and usually there was no toilet paper. The front of the units had all sorts of garbage with assorted sanitary products strewn about. The conditions on the interiors cannot be described. Waste was easily just about up to the seat. The floors were soupy with water and mud, and who knows whatever else. These things were heavily overused.
You cannot compromise people’s health for a few bucks. I guess what makes it worse is the foundations unwillingness to change here. Lack of porta potties has been the feedback we’ve provided for the last two or three years in addition to the horrible parking conditions and lack of cohesive traffic flow planning. These are the real safety red flags on site.
When we had a conversation with the Porta potty vendors there that weekend, while we were waiting in line, and mentioned to them that there were too few units they responded that every year they tell the battlefield association that they need to add more but that the battlefield refuses to to save money.. This is completely on the battlefield Association.
My unit and the 17 rifles we brought down can’t come back until the event can demonstrate they can sufficiently meet these basic human needs and is willing to ensure our safety while visiting the municipality.
The dance was super fun but wildly overcrowded.
The vendors or sutlers on site were the same as always with the same stuff, just thinner this year.
Someone selling ice cream would’ve made a fortune as the weekend was hot especially for the several hundred of us wearing a couple layers of coarse wool and with currency to burn for such modern comforts."
